HUMP Day Hops!

Summertime, and the blogging is FUN! Especially on Wednesdays with Joyce and the Hodge Podge and Patrice on her porch for a chat! Pull up a chair and join in the fun. Oh, and click the buttons too!

1. Summer officially rolls in with the Hodgepodge this week, for those of us in the Northern hemisphere anyway. What song says summer 2012 to you? This one- summer in the south and all----

2. What's your favorite quintessential summer food? Anything involving fresh veggies straight from the garden. In particular- tomato and/or cucumber sandwiches! Oh, and strawberry shortcake! And watermelon! And....LOL

3. I've spent a lot of time traipsing up and down the NJ Turnpike in recent weeks. Did you know the rest areas on the turnpike are named after people who lived or worked in NJ? Clara Barton, Walt Whitman, James Fenimore Cooper, Molly Pitcher, Joyce Kilmer, Thomas Edison, and Gover Clevland just to name a few. Of those I listed, who would you most like to have known and why?Walt Whitman...wait, James Fenimore Cooper...it's a toss up! I have this thing for writers- especially those I can actually understand. Wait---didn't Kilmer write "Trees"---because I have to add him to the list now. I don't know- they all have something exciting about them that I'd like to discuss!

4. At what age did you move out of your parent's house and what prompted the move?18. College! WooHoo! I was so ready and I never looked back!

5. What's more satisfying to you-saving time or saving money? Ha! Well, since I totally suck at saving either of those----how about BOTH!

6. Name something you think brings out the good in people.Greeting them with a smile seems to always work to improve their mood and, with an improved mood comes a happier person. And witnessing a good deed.

7. This last question comes to you courtesy of Kathy over at Reflections...will you be taking a vacation or a staycation this summer? If so where will you go? If a staycation is on the calendar have you made any special plans to fill the time? We never vacation or staycation. We are quite boring- we just do the same things year 'round.

8. Insert your own random thought here. I've located a holistic vet for Tucker. She's coming for the first time next Wednesday! That's right- she comes to us! It costs about the same thing for her to come here as it does for me to take Tuck to the vet we've been using. And I like him BUT- they just did a renovation (that I don't think they needed to do) and are pushing us to send them new clients to help pay for it AND his office is, in my opinion, WAY over staffed. So I'm paying for a new look and too many employees. I don't like that.

And while we're on the subject of dogs, Birdie's dog, Strider, is with us while Birdie is all important and being the head trainer at the Lundy Soccer camp in NC. Strider is a great dog but I'm ready for him to leave. He is too good at putting guilt trips on me. This morning was a run morning so I go first to run and then come back and get the dogs. Strider met me at the door with leash in mouth and I had to tell him he had to wait until I got back from my run. If you could have seen the look on his face! I nearly skipped the run. Sheesh.

QUESTIONS

  1. Do you ever go on picnics? When was the last one? Do you go somewhere with benches and tables, or do you take your own blanket? I haven't been on a picnic in AGES. I used to take the lovelies every single day in the summer and we would either go to the beach or just have one in the back yard. Mostly, we went to the beach!
  2. What's your favorite tropical fruit? Don't even have to think about it----Pineapple!
  3. Wendell would like me to ask you if you've ever ridden a horse? Any pony rides as a child? Yes and I loved it! Nothing fancy, just riding around the pasture or down a country road. But it was big fun!
  4. Describe the purse you are currently carrying. If you don't use a purse, what color is your wallet? I just carry a zippered key chain- it's big enough to hold my driver's license and various cards. It's a Vera Bradley and it's the Cafe Latte pattern.
  5. Please tell me the last funny thing that you just recently remembered. This can be something funny that happened to you in the past, or just something funny that you remember. My brother and I were just talking about the time our parents were out and all of us were home. We were in our teens and Tony walked past the den window and hit the floor immediately and whispered yelled for us to, "GET DOWN, THERE'S SOMEONE OUTSIDE!" We freaked out and were trying to discuss what our options were. Tony decided to stand up and check it out and, as soon as he did, he saw the person again. Well, you've probably figured out by now that it was HIS REFLECTION in the window NOT an intruder. We laugh about it now but, at the time, it scared the crap out of us. And yes, my other brothers and I didn't let him live it down until...well, we still haven't.

Have a fantastic Wednesday y'all!

  1. Definitely hard for me to pick just one summer food. I love all the fresh produce. We're surrounded by farms here so it is easy to stop at their stands when I'm out and about every day.

A vet that comes to the house-how nice! I like our vet and they are not overstaffed but always always always keep me waiting too long.

  5. Funny story about your brother! I like pineapple too. What have you been doing on the NJ turnpike? Isn't that a bit far from you? Just being nosey. Strider sounds like such a con artist!Wendell sends a hug- bug hug-big Wendell!

  6. I just reread- YOU have not been on the NJ turnpike. DUH! It's not worth the drive anyway- too many tolls if I recall correctly.

  7. We are summer fruit & veggie-a-holics and freeze a ton of fresh produce! No garden for us this first here here...that's next year & we're oh so lucky to get farm fresh veggies for one of our long time farmer friends!!!...:)JP

  8. Joyce- I hope she's going to be THE vet for us. And I particularly like that she's holistic! You're lucky to be surrounded by farms! We have them around here too, and they're organic, but the two that I love the most are at least a 45 minute drive. Worth it though!

April- Good Morning! Wait, it's afternoon now. LOL I'm just about to go out in the garden and pick some beans! Yum!

Bobbi- I'm so glad you got a smile out of my answers! That just made my day! Thanks!

Betty-I'm really hoping this one is going to be the one we stick with!

Patrice- Strider IS a con artist...much like a certain horse we all know and love. LOL Give the WenMan my love! And to you and the girls too!

JP- My garden is doing so well this year! Finally! It struggled the first couple of years but I think I've got it now! I think farmer friends are the BEST!

  10. Dogs are very good at guilt-tripping us humans. Ours used to go and get her leash and carry it around in her mouth looking at us with her sad brown eyes. It almost always worked.

I love cucumber sandwishes, too. No tomatoes, though. Just fresh cuke, salt, pepper and mayo.

  11. I'm with you on the vacation/staycation thing - we pretty much stay put, too. Or take the occasional day trip. We'll venture out to the beach but only when it's early so it's cooler and less crowded. :)

And speaking of vets, it's almost time to take the tortoises for their check-up...

  12. LP- Ha! That's funny- we eat squash year 'round so I never think of it as a summer veggie! We have a really long growing season. Really. Long. LOL

Stephanie- That's the same way I eat my cucumber sandwiches AND my tomato sandwiches. When I was growing up, I preferred my tomatoes on my grandmother's homemade biscuits! Oh gosh were they delicious!

MMS- The biggest issue I have with the beach from May til September is the crowds. There are people everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Once the season is over and the temps cool down, I'm THERE! :)

  13. Your answer to #2 has me anxious to go to the Farmer's Market on Sunday. I love that you went to college. I wish someone would have guided me in that direction. We do trips year round too.

  14. Yeah, it's not like we need the dogs to start guilting us! Good grief Strider!

Oh yeah, you are so boring...LOL I suppose that's why we love coming to your blog, right?

That incident with your brother? My brothers used to deliberate scare me to death, doing things like turning off the main power to the house when the folks were gone and then chasing me with a maniac laugh and a flashlight under his chin. It's surprising that I even turned out normal! oh wait...

  16. Since you live at the beach, every day can be a vacation for you, if you want :) LOL

Funny story about your brother and his reflection :)

  17. Oh gosh Pam that is a funny story. I can see you hit the ground and be scared to death.
I loved all of your answers too. I guess me and my husband are pretty boring too, we just do the same thing all of the time. :) I loved all of your answers.

  18. My favorite answer was the vacation one, you do the same thing all year round... that really cracked me up. Peaches and grapes are my favorite summer foods, but summer veggies, especially red and yellow peppers are quite good.

  19. I switched over to a wallet with a wrist strap for summer...I don't need to carry around all that extra stuff that I feel like is required during school!
Interesting about the holistic vet...I never knew there was such a thing!

  20. Oh, I love that song, I listened to it while I read all your answers!
Dogs have a way of performing the guilt thing :)
Paying for the Vet remodel, love it!
Oh, I love Pineapples but with age, well, I am not sure it is doing much good that I have to take a Pepcid or Tums after eating it LOL, the acid is a killer for me.
Love the story. Isn't it funny about our youth and the things that scared us.
