Silent Hodge Podge

Poor Joyce! She's not allowed to talk. No, not by her husband, by her doctor. Silly y'all. :)

Seriously, as a seasonal sufferer of laryngitis, I can tell you that silence is NOT golden. At least, not on the part of the afflicted. The sick one. Not the ones who have to listen to us.

Anyway, please join in the fun over there and cheer Joyce up with some lively banter! Pleasing pleasantries! Straight up talk!

1. The popular saying, 'All is fair in love and war' is originally credited to English writer John Lyly.  Is he right? I'm pretty sure that the only people who say that and believe it are the ones who have come out on top. Once the table is reversed, I highly doubt they'd say the same thing. Anyway, I do NOT believe that all is fair in love. And in war? What is there at all about war that is fair?

2. Are you a cereal eater?  What's your favorite kind? Not anymore. I liked it when I was growing up. Especially Captain Crunch.

3. A five year old in Pennsylvania was recently given a ten day school suspension for talking with a friend about shooting one another with a Hello Kitty Bubble gun (the gun blows bubbles).  She did not have the gun with her at school. I told someone at school today I was about to shoot myself. Can I PLEASE be suspended?????

A psychological evaluation was also ordered and the incident was recorded on her permanent record.  The suspension was later reduced to two days and her parents are suing to have the incident removed from her file. Your thoughts?  (If you missed the story click here for details). You've heard of extreme sports? Yeah, well, this is extreme paranoia. Or something like that. Sometimes the powers that be take things way too far.

4. Whatever happened to childhood innocence?

5.  January 23rd is National Handwriting Day, billed as a day to reacquaint yourself with a pen and pencil.  Do you like your handwriting? Do you prefer to print or write in cursive?  This date was chosen because its the birth date of John Hancock. What's the last thing you signed your name to? I do like my handwriting. My mood totally determines whether I prefer to print or write in cursive. The last thing I signed my name to was some paperwork for school.

6. Speaking of John Hancock...ever been to Philadelphia? Do you have any desire to visit the city of Brotherly Love? I have never been. I used to have a desire to go but, after hearing what DoodleBug had to say about it from her visit there, never mind. I'll go somewhere else.

7.  Share something funny you've heard a child say. I hear something funny every day---thanks to teaching elementary students. I just wrote a post about a few of them right HERE

8.  Insert your own random thought here.Three of the lovelies and I were quite jealous when we found out that Deanie got to go to the inauguration. One of her roomies works at the White House so she really gets to do a lot of cool stuff. She also got to bar tend (her second job) at one of the parties on Friday night and made $500. I'm definitely in the wrong business.

Meanwhile, DoodleBug is absolutely LOVING student teaching. This is one kid that was made for teaching.

And last, I have started trying to run. Again. I kept having this breathing problem where, after running for a short distance (we're talking yards here people, NOT miles) I would feel like I was having a panic attack. All the runners I've talked to about this say it's common and I just have to stick with it. So, here I go again. They say it won't happen overnight. Which is very bad since this is exactly how I want it to happen. Overnight. It's a self- inflicted, inward battle folks. Good grief.

Ok, it's your turn to get your Hodge Podge on!

  1. It saddens me that kids know too much. They grow up so fast these days. It feels like they don't get to enjoy their childhood, and grown-ups with their ridiculousness don't help any.

  2. Extreme sports, extreme paranoia-good way to put it!
I think most of us are shaking our heads...
    Anyway, have a great night!

  3. A 5 year old suspended? That is very serious, I didn't think you could suspend a child so young, it's an awful start to schooling, and not a decision to take lightly.
    Delighted your daughter likes teaching!
And congrats on running again, I have the same problem with breathing, feel I'm going to run out of breath, so I stop and walk 50 steps, then start again. I'm told it's just joining the dots, but I haven't managed it (yet!).

  4. Arlene- Me too. It's always in the back of my mind but, since I've gone back to teaching, it's taken an up-front position. I had a fifth grader ask me if the windows in the lab were bullet proof yesterday. Sad.

Josanne- Yeah, there's a point that things just become ridiculous. That was one.

  5. I agree with your answer for #1. I think if you are the person who lost you wouldn't think it was fair.

  6. Hey, what's up with Philly? I've never heard anything too bad, except for those Philly cheese steak sandwiches. Do you get the physical symptoms of a panic attack when you run? Or is it all a mental thing? This is really interesting, I've never experienced that, I've also never experiences making $500 in a night, so I'm going to sign up for a bar tending class now....:)

  7. I´m back! I missed you.
Loved reading your answers. And agree on all of them.
Especially the one of children's innocence.

Good luck with the running. I´ll stick with walking. :)

  8. I got kind of hung up on the Hello Kitty gun. Then I re-read and saw the word 'bubble'. Making a gun that would be marketable to first-grade girls didn't seem too far out of touch with reality. How sad is that?

And it pretty much illustrates your great response to #4.

  9. Great answers this week. Yep, people are over board now when it comes to the things kids say. It is crazy. Does anyone remember Salem Witch Trials. That is how it is becoming. Poor kids.
We have that same problem here with running. It is due to our horrible air quality. Which my son told me last week is now the worst in the nation.
We also get this thing called dust pneumonia. Which I have had. It really does look like lung cancer on the Xrays. I imagine if I went somewhere else that is what I would be diagnosed with. The doctor here said, " Were you born here?" I said Yep and she just let it go and explained that is how it is living here. The funny thing is she asked if I was a runner. Haha isn't that a hoot? I know that feeling though of the panic attack. Being motivated because of photos, new dress and crap like that I have been pushing through. :)Have a wonderful rest of the week. Friday is almost here.

  10. hey you! I tried to follow you from the Blog Party and it clicked at first then I noticed it went away and I kept trying and so I thought I would wait a few days and come back over and try again. It looks like it clicked this time and now I hope it doesn't go away. I have never had that happen before, have you?
Anyway, love your sense of humor! I see you love the cold weather too! Not me lol !
good luck with your running too :)
just remember mind over matter !

  12. Mimi- It sure is. And I’m not sure they even had any bad intentions in mind. I always thought motivation played a role but, apparently, not anymore. She truly does love it. I just hope the powers that be don’t steal her idealism and joy too early on. Though I know they will try. That’s what I’m doing now too and I haven’t connected the dots either. We’ll get there!

Madonna- I know, right? It’s way easier to say that and believe it when one is ‘winning.’ LOL

Alessandra-I don’t know. She said the people were really rude and it was quite dirty. But then, she’s used to the south. She loves her roomie who is from there and her family though. And she loved the Amish territory. So there are good things, just not so much the city. According to her, that is. I do get the physical symptoms of a panic attack but I don’t know whether it’s mind over matter or what. All I know is that everyone I’ve talked to about it said they had the same problem and I will eventually work through it if I just stick with it. I think, with Deanie, it’s part bartending and part her being so savvy with the flirting game. LOL

Betty- HEY GIRL!!! Good to ‘see’ you! I’m still walking on the days I don’t run.

Stephanie- Pink guns! I know some women right now who would go right out and get themselves one. LOL Seriously, some of this has gotten completely out of hand around here.

Kim- Excellent point about the witch trials. Paranoia is setting in. Remember the lyrics to Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth? “Paranoia strikes deep; into your life it will creep. It starts when you’re always afraid. You step out of line, the man come and take you away.” Yep. So, nothing is ever done about the air quality? Is it from factories/pollution/etc? Or from nature itself? That’s really scary. Really. Scary. I wish I had been motivated before Breezy got married but I wasn’t. And the pix are TERRIBLE. I’m glad you’re not going to let that happen to you!

Sandy- So glad you tried again! Yay! Thank you so much! I’m trying to keep that in mind!

Debby- Thanks! It does seem a little better this time. But then, we aren’t having hot weather right now either.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It makes me feel connected to everyone even though we may live far apart! Have a wonderful day!
