Are People Really That Stupid?

Apparently, they are.

I'm talking about ROWE- Results Only Work Environments. The problem I have with is not with the concept but with the fact that people are JUST NOW figuring it out. How slow and stupid can we be?

Isn't the fact that being allowed, encouraged, to put your family first by employers results in more and better productivity common sense? It is to me.

Getting the work done without worrying about when and how is a MAJOR stress reducer as well as MAJOR productivity producer. Duh.

Think about it---if your employer encourages you to put your family first and, as long as deadlines are met and work is exemplary, tells you it doesn't matter whether you do the work at home or at the office or whether you do it from 9-5 or after midnight, wouldn't you WANT to work for that person? Wouldn't you WANT to produce exemplary work? Without question- YES!

Not to mention the fact that businesses can save on their overhead by lessening the numbers of desks AND office space. If an employee needs to come into the office, they can reserve a desk and come in. Even their utility bills would go down. Thus saving energy.

Sounds like a win-win-win to me. But then, I've always held to this belief. What annoys me is that the idea seems new and revolutionary to the work force. I suppose I should just be glad that they FINALLY adopted some common sense. But I can't help but wonder how much further along they'd be had they awakened decades ago. Seriously, I was thinking this back in the 70s and I'm sure I wasn't the first or only. It's not new. It's not revolutionary.

I think it's gaining notoriety because it now has a label. ROWE. Who knew that's all it would take for common sense to kick in?

If that's the case, I'm going to come up with a label for husbands. One that will have mine doing what he says he's going to do in a timely fashion. And for messy daughters who move back in and disrupt my neat and clean empty nest.

Or maybe I'll just change the locks. Ha!

  2. I am so blessed to work in that wonderful environment of family first, and performance is based on how you do your job, not how many hours you sit at your desk. We are limited to 45 hours a week, due to security issues, which is also a blessing! Interesting that it now has a name. I've been here almost 17 years, and that is how it has always been for us. Blessed.

Terri- Our asst principal is very family oriented. The principal is more now that she has grands. LOL You are, indeed, blessed to work in that environment.

  4. In 2002 I had major, major knee and shin surgery and was out of work for 6 weeks. I didn't use but a week of sick time because I was able to bring my laptop home and one of my staff would drop off and pick up work when I necessary. The two weeks before Rich died (different job) I was working from my laptop so I could be sure he didn't get hurt if I wasn't there. Can you imagine the fuel that we could conserve if we did this? Bruce has been saying this for years as well. The corporations are worried if they can't watch over you to make sure they are getting their money's worth.

  5. When I was in the work world, I never had the luxury of working from home, but I think it would be wonderful!

As for the husband and messy daughter :)))

  6. It would be awesome if more people could work from home. Jim works from home on Sundays getting ready for the new week. We use to always have to go in and get things done. It's a start but like you said to bad it took so long to take hold.
Hubby, daughter/son labels...now that would be awesome.
    Blessings my dear friend!

  7. Barb- Micromanagement is everywhere. Even in the schools. Trust me. LOL

Nancy- I can't do it either. Unless my students came to my house. LOL But it is nice when employers recognize the importance of our family and do whatever they can to show employees support.

Julie- Agreed. I've got my labels already picked out. LOL

  8. Your situation is very similar to the way mine was in 2008. When I was working,my daughter(who was pregnant) called me from home. My employers said sure go family first..then docked pay. Some employers are nice. But some are not.
