What's That You Say? ANOTHER Birthday?!

Yes indeed! Today is my mother's birthday!

When the good Lord was creating mothers He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said, "You’re doing a lot of fiddling around this one."
And the Lord said, "Have you read the specs on this order? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic; Have 180 moveable parts... all replaceable; Run on black coffee and leftovers; Have a lap that disappears when she stands up; A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair; And six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."

Mother spent most of her childhood barefoot. Let's just say that the apples really don't fall far from the tree.

"It’s not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord. "It’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."
"That’s on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, "What are you kids doing in there?" when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, "I understand and I Love You" without so much as uttering a word."
"Lord", said the angel, toughing His sleeve gently, "Come to bed. Tomorrow..."

Mother in her wedding gown that she designed and hand made- including all the attached pearls and tiny little satin covered buttons down the back.

"I can’t," said the Lord, "I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick... can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger... and can get a nine-year-old to stand under a shower."
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It’s too soft," she sighed.
"But tough!" said the Lord excitedly. "You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure."
"Can it think?"
"Not only think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. "There’s a leak," she pronounced. "I told You. You were trying to put too much into this model."
"It’s not a leak," said the Lord, "it’s a tear."
"What’s it for?"
"It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride."
"You are a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn’t put it there." (ERMA BOMBECK)

Happy Birthday Mother!

  1. I know this was a happy post, but it has brought tears to my eyes! Such a wonderful, loving tribute to your precious Mother and so super to have seen her through each of her life's stages. Babyhood to where she is today, the proud Grandmother to her beautiful Granddaughters. The family resemblance is uncanny. Her genes have carried through strongly! Happy Birthday to your dear, sweet, wonderful Mother!!!

  2. I love that Erma Bombeck piece of writing, and it's such a fitting tribute to your mum on her birthday. Such gorgeous photos as well. Wasn't she pretty. Love the wedding dress, and the photo of Mimi with your lovelies at the end.

  3. I know you'll find this funny but we definitely have semi-parallel lives : ) My mother in laws birthday was Sunday and my dad's birthday was yesterday (he is no longer living but of course I always think of him on that day especially)

The wedding dress is gorgeous and impressive! Any of the lovelies plan to wear it?

  4. What a beautiful tribute to your mother!

  5. What a lovely tribute to your Mother!
    Happy Birthday to your Mother!
    Big hugs

  6. A very happy birthday to your mom! I loved the photos. It's so fun to see photos of people as they age through the years...other people that is. :-)

  7. Kathy- Thank you!

Desiree- Her genes have carried through in more ways than physical appearances. All of us are strong, independent and stubborn. LOL Thanks!

Diane- I always love that too. Erma was a hoot! Wish I had known her in real life! Thanks!

Joyce- I'm beginning to think we were separated at birth. LOL To be honest, I have no idea where the wedding gown is- I'll have to ask about that. Breezy designed her wedding gown and Mimi made it for her. I think the other girls are thinking of doing the same thing.

    Kara- Thanks!

    Eva- Thank you!

Judy- I know exactly what you mean. LOL

Stephanie- And once more on Monday when it will be Aunt Betty's birthday! Lots of fun in the month of March in our family!

  8. Mothers...the epitome of self-sacrifice for children and homes. What would we do without them??? My Mum turned 90 this Christmas. What a celebration!!!

  9. That was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!...:)JP

  10. What a lovely post and what a beautiful mother you have. I love that wedding dress.

  11. Happy belated birthday to your mom! I had never read this from Erma B. before and it was very moving. Gave me an idea of what your mom is like. Blessings to her!

  12. What beautiful pictures of your mother! I loved this post. Wishing her a Happy Birthday (a day late I'm afraid). I miss Erma!

  13. Wonderful pics and words! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It makes me feel connected to everyone even though we may live far apart! Have a wonderful day!
