Adulting through Life and the Hodgepodge

Here we are back on Wednesday. Sadly, there's no winter weather this time other than cold and the predicted wet snow that will fall with the rain today while our friends further north within the state will get some of that lovely winter white wonder called snow. I am so grateful we did see some this year but that won't stop me from wanting more. I'm selfish like that. Oh, all you lovely folks way up north or in the great midwest- yeah, that's TOO much and while I appreciate your willingness to share I think I'll pass on 250 feet of snow and ice and subzero temps. But, thanks!

Let's get on with the reason we're all here- the Hodgepodge!

From this Side of the Pond

1. What keeps you blogging? My enjoyment of it, my determination to write, the itch to express my voice, and the interaction with other blogging friends.

2. Some people like to travel in the winter months. Do you enjoy the beach in winter? YES! So much better than any other time of year. According to Southern Living the best U.S. beach towns to visit this winter are-

St Simons Island (Georgia), Hilton Head (South Carolina), Bald Head Island (North Carolina), Seaside (Florida), Bay St. Louis (Mississippi), Cape San Blas (Florida), South Padre Island (Texas), Folly Beach (South Carolina), Chincoteague (Virginia), Duck Key (Florida), Nags Head (North Carolina), and Fairhope (Alabama)

Have you been to any of the towns listed (in any season)? Yes- St Simons, Hilton Head, Bald Head, Folly, and Nags Head. Which on the list appeals to you most this winter? None because I live so close to the beach why bother traveling? I'll just head over to Sullivan's Island which is a mere 3.1 miles from my front door. I would walk over but I'm still not back into my walking habit. Why not Folly? It's not the same Folly it was way back in the day and the traffic getting over there is RIDICULOUS.

3. What's a song you're embarrassed to know all the lyrics to? I can't think of any. Are you really embarrassed or do just think you should be? Neither. If I like a song, I like it and do not care whether anyone else does or not. That being said, there are songs I know but cannot stand getting stuck in my head. They aren't embarrassing as much as they are annoying. And I never think of those until someone starts humming or singing one and it gets stuck in my head. Then I remember it. Ha!

4. When you were a kid what's something you thought would be fantastic as an adult, but now that you're an adult you realize it's not all that fantastic? Making my own decisions and doing whatever I want to do. Ha! The decisions are not easy and we never get to do everything we want. Adulting. is. a. trap.

5. Share a quote you hope will inspire you in 2018.

But seriously--

6. Insert your own random thought here. My 2018 calendar finally arrived. It's late because I ordered it late not because it took forever to get here. Can't blame this one on the USPS. My mother used to buy me a new calendar as part of my Christmas every year and I always loved the folk art ones. One year Mother couldn't find a folk art calendar so she got me a different one and it was very nice and about as close to folk art as one can get without it actually being folk art so it was fine except I looked at that thing every time I went into the kitchen and lamented over it not being a folk art calendar. That was one hell of a year. Why? Because I am super picky about my calendars. Super. Picky. So I started buying my own calendars every year in order to avoid the horror of the non-folk art calendar year ever happening again. I think I might be a bit too picky but when you find one the meets all you calendar criteria, you stick with it.

Here's the cover of last year's calendar. It was perfect.

Here's the sleeve this year's calendar came in because the
calendar is already hanging in the kitchen and I didn't want to
walk the 100 steps in there to take a picture of January. Ha!

  1. Oh I just love those posters. They gave me a good laugh! And I love it when you write about your area, how it used to be, how close you are to the beach, etc. Up here, even our lakes are frozen and people drive on them. Beautiful calendars. I usually have the one from the bank or the feed mill. Sometimes I'll buy a German Shepherd calendar.

    1. It's so cold here right now but you'd probably be in shorts if you were here. LOL I would be way too scared to drive on a frozen lake for fear of it not being quite frozen enough. I'm not really into polar plunges. Ha! My granddaddy and grandmother always had the bank calendars. :)

  2. You crack me up!!! Love Sullivan's Island...wonder just how much longer it's going to be before it is really discovered?
    Those quotes....sooooo funny!
Have a good day! Bundle up!!!

    1. Loads of folks have discovered Sullivan's but they only venture over in the summer months which is when it's too hot for me to venture out at all. Haha! Years ago (decades, actually) there was a little caddy corner house and the people would put up a sign every weekend that read: NEXT WEEK ENJOY FOLLY. And we all felt that was a good idea. Of course, that was when the only way on and off the islands was a two lane draw bridge that opened every 30 minutes OR on demand. Bill Murray and Reese Witherspoon used to have houses out there but she moved and his wife kept that house...I think. Anyway, he lives downtown Charleston now and I have no idea where Reese Witherspoon went. How's that for a tangent? LOL

    1. Of course I had to look up Kim Jacobs calendars. :) The artwork is lovely and I bet my grandmother would have loved it, the pictures reminded me of her. :)

  5. I love those calendars too. However, it's been awhile since I've hung a calendar at home. I totally agree on the adulting thing and becoming a senior citizen is even worse. Where is that silver lining???

  6. My daughter1 made us a calendar for Christmas filled with pics of our little mancub. I am loving it! We got a bit of snow, enough to cancel schools and slow the pace of everything and I'm enjoying it. The lake is so pretty with the trees dressed in white. Supposed to be really cold overnight so I'm thinking tomorrow morning may be icy and another day out of school. Happy Wednesday!

    1. I've made those calendars before for family and they really enjoyed them. I would have to make one for myself if I wanted one since I have all the pictures. LOL I've been at my dad's on Lake Norman during snow before and I agree the lake is pretty with those snow covered trees. I'm so glad Y'all are enjoying the snow! Feel free to send some my way! :)

  7. I'm picky about my calendars, as well! I insist on having a Coca Cola calendar, and prefer the ones by Jim Harrison. I couldn't find a Jim Harrison one for 2018, unfortunately, so I had to settle for one with girls on it instead of old barns. It's going to be a long year...

    1. Oh, gosh! Those Jim Harrison paintings are awesome! Mother bought me a book of them one year since I'm so picky about the calendars. LOL I do love that book and take it out often to peruse the paintings. I read that Coca-Cola cancelled their agreement with his estate to publish a 2018 calendar. Shame. "It's going to be a long year..." LOL I see what you did there and it sure will be without your favorite calendar.

  8. Visiting you today from the Hodgepodge .... there is a T-shirt in a local store here that says, "I can't adult today." Don't we just feel that way sometimes?!!

    1. I do enjoy the winter. Summer here means sweating just walking to the car and I don't like that. LOL The sand we drag into the car from the beach is definitely annoying. Especially with little ones.

  10. I always get at least one good giggle from your posts, Pam! Love the adulting sayings. Folk art is so fun!! Not everyone loves it, so it's nice to know you do! The museum where I worked did several folk art exhibits over the years I was there. Faith Ringgold is one of my favorites. She does more quilts than paintings. http://www.artnews.com/2016/03/01/the-storyteller-faith-ringgold/

    1. I'm so glad you get a chuckle here, Terri. I love it when people tell me that because this is the difference I like to try and make- laughter is so important in our lives. OMGoodness! Faith Ringgold's quilts are INCREDIBLE! How wonderful you were able to enjoy the exhibits!

  11. I agree with your #1 answer. My answer included becoming famous but I dropped that a year or two.

  12. Love your calendar. I buy Suzy's Zoo every year. Great quote, that's me, finishing the things that I have said I would do for the last several years.
