Just One Day But It Was Glorious

They told us we'd have sleet turning to snow on Wednesday. It wasn't there when I woke up Wednesday morning but I wasn't expecting it until later in the AM so I sat and waited near the French doors so I could see it the minute it started just like I used to when I was a kid. And a teenager. And a young adult. And... Ok, the secret is out- this gal loves getting snow!

I worried a bit too, though. About the birds and squirrels and other backyard wildlife just like I do about the wildlife in the northern part of our country every winter and the wildlife in the hotter than hot areas and in places experiencing wildfires. Do I worry more about wildlife than people? In a way, yes because people can prepare or get out for the most part but the animals? Let's just say if we hadn't invaded and destroyed their natural habitats, the animals wouldn't be in some of this mess so I guess I do worry more about them. Wow, tangent much? Anyway...

I fed my backyard critters and tried to give them water even though it kept freezing. Where was my Tucker during all this? Right here:

Around 9:30, the police started shutting down the bridges which meant my excitement nearly sent me into heart failure. How silly, I thought, to be so excited about winter weather but Y'all, I LOVE winter. Autumn is my favorite and winter comes in at a close second. Now that our autumn doesn't bring cooler temperatures, winter may very well take over first place. It's not like we get beautiful fall colors either so...

By 10:00 I was hearing about accidents on the roads. Are you kidding me? People can do some stupid things, friends. Some very stupid things. We're not used to ice on the roads around here which is why businesses, schools, etc, shut down and yet, idiots go on outside, get in their cars, drive around and cause accidents. None of the accidents involved people who had to go to or from work except for one as far as I know which means they involved people who were out for no good reason. Good grief. If they were endangering only themselves, fine. But they involved other people and that is. not. cool.

We had a good bit of sleet and freezing rain and I wondered if we would actually see that snow in the forecast. The local channels went bat-crap crazy as they usually do when some sort of inclement weather hits our area.

Finally, around 1:00, it happened! SNOW! Glorious snow! And it kept coming and coming and STICKING! Snow everywhere I looked! It was beautiful!

I went out on the deck and just stood there listening with my eyes closed. When you don't get snow often (or all the time) you tend to forget the soft poofy sound snow makes. I love that sound. It's so peaceful and I don't even think about the cold until I come back inside. Tucker kept looking out the office window and letting out a little huff of disgust as he laid his head back down. He isn't a fan.

By 2:00, it was still snowing and that dreaded thought of it coming to an end entered the back of my mind. I did not want it to end so I put myself down in front of a window to watch and listen to some Louvin Brothers because sometimes you have to channel your inner granddaddy and I must have dozed off because age and all that and I startled awake thinking it was over but it was STILL SNOWING and that was 3:33.

Still soft. Still flowing. Still beautiful.

By 4:00 it was still falling in a heavy but slower, more peaceful way and by 5:30 the snow stopped falling,

Yes, it was just for one day but I loved it and I enjoyed it and I'm still enjoying it because yesterday it never got warm enough to melt much of the white loveliness and today, the same thing will happen. We'll be enjoying this for at least another day.

Tucker finally went outside Wednesday evening but he was not a happy camper.

Once he came back inside, there was snow from his belly down and that was fun to clean up. Yesterday, he went out and leaped through the snow like a deer. It was so funny except when he came inside and had to be cleaned up. We got a total of 5 inches and Tucker is not much taller than that.

I had to go out and clear a space for the birds to eat. The deck wasn't too bad at first but...

it ended up being covered so out I went with a cookie sheet to scrape off areas for the birds to enjoy their breakfast.

One thing you learn quite quickly when it snows and the temperatures stay in the teens and 20s for days on end is you do not have the proper clothing for this. All these fat layers were just no help at all. :)

It has been a wonderful snowmageddon here in the low-country of SC. I can't wait for the next one. In 10-20 years. Sigh.

Did Y'all get any snow this week?

  2. I'm with Tucker...I don't like it either. We have the snow and worse than that is the really, really cold temperatures. I think we're supposed to hit the 30's on Sunday. It will be like a heat wave! lol

I'm glad that you got your snow and get to enjoy it for a few days though. If I could, I'd ship ours to you too.

Stay warm and have a great weekend.

    1. The cold temperatures don't bother me too much as long as I can get warm which I cannot do in this house. We have a heat pump and if you turn the heat up too much, the heat strips come on and then you have to take out a loan to pay the electric bill and I refuse to do that. We view the electric and water companies down here as crooks. Not that we aren't grateful for electricity and water but people who move here can't believe how expensive it is. We're going into the 60s on Monday which is too warm for me. I need a place that stays in the 40s and 50s. LOL Thanks! You, too!

  3. No snow here and I am fine with that! I do remember the silence of snow though. I am happily over it and have been for years!

    1. I probably would be had I grown up with it. Where I lived we had just enough snow each year to get a sled for Christmas. It would snow and stick around for 3-5 days and be gone. Rarely would it snow more than once each winter. It was perfect! That's what I want now. I'm living in the wrong place. Ha!

  5. I've always loved snow days even though they're few and far between here in N. LOuisiana. Especially when I was teaching as that meant a day or two off from work.
We haven't had a snow like yours since our grand kids were toddlers. They were spending the night with us, and it was the most fun day ever when they woke up!

    1. I have, too. We always had at least one good snow every year when I was growing up but in the 33 years I've lived down here in the low-country I can count on one hand without using all the fingers how many snows we've been blessed to enjoy. I miss it. Oh what fun that must have been with the littles! I haven't 'seen' you in some time. How are you?

  6. "the police started shutting down the bridges which meant my excitement nearly sent me into heart failure" - not too many would express this feeling.
Good to hear you had your snow day.

    1. I know but it means the snow/ice has arrived (or the winds are way to strong to cross the bridges so stay your you-know-what at home) and I was going nuts waiting! I'm worse than a kid when it comes to snow. :)

    2. AND, 7 days later it is just now melting. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It makes me feel connected to everyone even though we may live far apart! Have a wonderful day!
