Grandma, Granny, MeMaw, Mimi

Not that anyone around here is having any babies BUT, they do keep asking what I want to be called when the grandchildren do come around.

I never knew how difficult this decision would be.

We've run through a bunch of them to no avail. MeMaw won't do because I don't particularly love it for myself and that's what the lovelies called my MIL. Mimi won't do because that's what the lovelies call my mother. MawMaw won't do because that's what the lovelies call my step-mother.

So we thought of other grandmother names.

  • Granny. NOT. Going. To. Happen.
  • Gigi. Supposedly a very Charleston thing to call one's grandmother but there was this girl in high school named Gigi and I was not a fan of hers so, no.
  • Grammy. I feel almost the same way about this one as I do about Granny.
  • Nana. Nope.
  • Nonna. Doesn't suit.
  • Nonny. You're kidding, right?
  • Granmama. Ha! No.
  • Bunny, Cookie, Gabby, Honey. Puh-leeze.
  • Yaya. This one is still being held for consideration.
  • G'Ma. What is that? Text lingo for Grandmother?
  • Lady. Ok, that's what DoodleBug calls me and there IS a story, though I won't go into it right now. So this is still a contender.

None of these suit me.

I am going to be in big trouble if and when those grands start coming. I guess they could say, "Hey you!"

The only two that I am still considering are Yaya and Lady.

My question for y'all is: What are your ideas for this?????

Help me out here. I can't have the grands calling me 'that woman with no name.'

    1. I saw that one. And thought about it. But I'm not sure it fits. I do like it though. Thanks!

  2. I am Beeba. I have friends who are called Mimi, Gigi, GaGa, Grammy, and Bella. Oma is German for grandmother. Whatever you're called, you'll love it. (Though I told my kids that MawMaw or MeeMaw or any variation thereof was never going to happen!)

    1. Yeah, I have a few that just aren't going to happen too. This is going to keep me busy until someone finally gets around to having a baby. LOL

  3. I didn't see this coming. It was not until our first grandchild was already here that I was assigned "papa". Then when the next grandchild came along (from a different couple) the name papa stuck. I like it. Just having a grandchild is so wonderful why would I worry about the name they call me. It's funny when they get old enough to understand people have multiple names and they think it's funny to call you by your first name. Well it's funny for a short while.
I suggest you go with something that is easy to pronounce and short. From the two you listed, I would pick "yaya".

    1. I like yaya too. My girls like to refer to me as whatever I'd like to be called to their dogs. Yes. Their dogs. Good grief. And so, whatever they call me to their dogs is what they want to call me to their kids. I could go with 'Nice Lady of Crazy People". LOL

  4. This really made me chuckle. I have a co-worker who has her grands call her "Queen". She loves being Queen!!

Ours call us Grandma and Grandpa, because their other side of the family are Granny and PopPop. Fine with me. I think the Italian Nonna is kind of nice, however!

  5. This is a tough one. My grandkids call me 'Gramma.' the other side of the family grandmas are called 'Grandma' and 'Nana.' I'm happy with 'Gramma.' How about 'The Sage.' :-)
