NuVision

I've been considering a tablet for over one year now. I wasn't in a rush because I have a laptop that works ok. It's not old, I just don't love it. I should have stuck with HP, my favorite, or gone with a Dell.

The problem arises when I mention what I'm looking for to other people and they take it upon themselves to do my thinking for me. That's how I ended up with a Gateway laptop that I don't love. It's also how I ended up with one of these:

That I also don't love even though it, like my laptop, is red. I'm not opposed to trying out new thing but, when it comes to my technology decisions, I'd really prefer to make them on my own.

I knew that I didn't want an iPad. I am one of the few people in the world who does not find Apple products all that user friendly. But, I'd almost gladly take one over this NuVision tablet I received.

I had gotten as far as nixing the Surface or Surface Pro. Neither of those sounded like the ideal tablet for me. I mostly started there because of my aversion to Apple products and the fact that Terry and the boys on FOX NFL Sunday were using the Surface tablet. But, after further investigation, the Surface was not for me. I moved on.

My goal was to find something that was not only portable but that also had a detachable keyboard so that I could phase out my laptop.

The problems with the NuVision Tablet:
  • The one I got is too big; it becomes awkward when I try to use the tablet without the case or the keyboard.
  • The sleek design makes it difficult to hold onto without the case.
  • The case houses both the tablet and the keyboard, If you open the thing wrong, the keyboard falls out onto the tablet. If you leave the keyboard out to use the case, it's awkward. Which translates into buying a different case for times you don't want to take the keyboard along.
  • It doesn't work all the time. I mean, it starts up but it doesn't stay connected to the internet; the keyboard flashes off and on instead of being steady on when I am using it; when I am typing, sometimes it takes five times as long for the words to appear on the screen from when I enter the letters. I hardly ever use the keypad on the screen but it keeps flashing up and then down. Frustrating is the kindest word I can use for this.
  • It loses internet connection constantly. I have to reboot and all is well. And then, other times, it works like a charm. Frustrating, again.
  • No Microsoft Word. It comes with some program called Kingsoft Office and I wasn't impressed. I am using Google Docs on the tablet instead.
  • The camera has yet to take a good picture. Everything has been blurry. And it's not the user. I've had others try it.
  • It takes FORVER to fully charge. Sometimes overnight. Other times overnight and into the next day.
The good features:
  • When it works, it's fine- as in ok, not great.
  • It's red.
  • The case is quite functional when using both the tablet and keyboard.
  • The battery lasts longer than my laptop battery.
Ok, all you techies out there, give me your words of wisdom. What am I missing here that I should try or should be doing differently? Any suggestions for a better, more functional tablet?

  1. I am not tech savvy. I have my HP 17" Laptop, my Kindle Fire and my Galaxy S5 smart phone. They all work great for me. I like being able to toss the Kindle into my purse. A bigger tablet would be too small for me to use instead of my laptop and too big to put in my purse, so it's not something I've ever looked at. Good luck and I hope someone else is more helpful than I am!

    1. I hear ya. I was taking my time trying to figure out exactly what to do when this was given to me. Not that it isn't a nice gift, it's just not the one for me. Then again, when it works, it's not that bad. Maybe it's just me. LOL Thanks!

  2. Gosh, what I do know is I wouldn't buy that one. I have a Dell laptop, but I prefer my desktop, Dell too. I don't know how new Dells work, but I have always been pretty happy with the products and have never had any serious problems like you describe with your NuVision tablet. I always thought my lap top was pretty stable. I have never gone smaller though. I have my phone but I don't think I will ever go to a tablet. I am not a techy by any means. I have just been happy with the Dell Dependability. Now I am sounding like a commercial. :) Have a wonderful day.

    1. We use Dell at and we don't have much trouble with them at all. I was thinking of going Dell but then thought staying with HP was smart since I'm used to those and don't have problems with them when, suddenly, someone gives me this Gateway. It's one of the most annoying computers ever. But hey, it works! The tablet though, I need to do something different there.

  3. I have a HP laptop that I love esp. for its lighted keyboard, I use it in hotels when the hubs is still sleeping.
I have an iPad, the first one, and when it dies I will not buy another. I do love it as a reader but that's an expensive reader.
I have a Kobo (Cdn Kindle) handy to throw in my purse but not as nice to read on as the iPad.

    1. I always loved my HPs. I probably should have just stayed with them. When we get used to certain things, it's just easier, you know? Maybe part of the problem is: too many choices! :)

  5. I have a gateway laptop (not real crazy about it...mostly because of the off-center mouse pad). I bought a tablet from WalMart for about $100, but all I wanted it for was to read books. I have an iPad for work, and have been just about to throw it several times. The only thing that kept me from it is that it's the school system's! We aren't "fruities"...Apple gets you because instead of just updating, you have to buy a whole new product. Sometimes those updates they do have ruins your iPad/phone/laptop.
Honestly, I don't think I could phase out my laptop because I have so many pictures, and it's easier to maneuver than a tablet. Some people do it...I just don't think I could! Good luck!!! :)

    1. YES! And, YES! You're saying everything that I've either said or thought! Great minds and all that. LOL I'm having that issue with the one Apple product I have, an iPod, which is all out of space so I have to buy a new one. Nope. Not going to happen. I have a lot of pictures on my laptop, too, but I transfer everything over to an external hard drive weekly. Just in case.
