Empty Nest Easter

When you live in an empty nest (or empty except for one lingerer) you tend to overlook some holidays. Or, at least I do. This only started happening when the lovelies grew up and moved out on their own. Not so much when they went off to college because they still came home and expected the whole shebang but after college was over, x4, I slowed down on what I term the lesser holidays. Not because they are lesser in meaning per se but more because they are lesser in terms of family coming together.

Peter Rabbit came for dinner. On a couple of tea sets.
For example, no one likes to miss Christmas around here and if I had my way Thanksgiving would be included in this. But Easter, July 4th and the like take a backseat as far as me going all out decorating and preparing a huge family meal.

Here's the little one. Maybe next year we'll have tea with Baby M.
But then I thought, why should I not prepare food on these 'lesser' holidays? Wouldn't that bring my independent-minded daughters and their SOs back into the nest for a minute? You know, long enough to enjoy but not long enough to be considered roomies.

I made food! Not a ridiculous amount, but I made it.
And there was key lime pie for dessert.

Plus, there is a granddaughter now and she should know the fun of our family gatherings. Actually, if we expose her to them now she won't be frightened as she gets older because we are a fun-loving, crazy bunch and I wouldn't change us one little bit.

All that being said, we gathered for Easter dinner this year. It was Baby M's first Easter and I think, when she looks back at family photos, she needs to see her 'first' holiday gatherings whether she was old enough to understand the concept or not.

And I enjoy having everyone over. It's good to laugh and share and just have a good time with those you love.

These two were MIA and I missed them so much!

But they'll be here this summer for Baby M's first birthday and the baby shower for this auntie who's expecting my first GRANDSON in August.

Yep. There's going to be a boy up in here. And none of us quite know what to do about that. But we'll certainly find out in August. We are all excited that Baby M will have a cousin so very close in age and it's pretty cool to have one of each.

Yes, he already has a name but he'll be known as Baby R here on Empty Nest. Y'all know my empty nest, right? The one that's beginning to be overflowing with grandbabies?

Ok moms/grandmas of boys, is there really any difference in what you do other than love them to pieces?

  1. I don't have a girl grandbaby, so I guess I can't really say. But let me tell you I love, love, love having a boy grandbaby. He is just so laid back and easy. I think it's a little harder to find cute clothes for a boy, but trust me, I manage. I'm anxious to see what it will be like as he grows older.

Anyway, one thing I know, you will love Baby R just as much as you love Baby M!

    1. That's what I figured- the loving part is the same. :) I've heard that about the boy clothes but Baby M's mommy doesn't like frilly, pink girly-girl clothes so I have to pass on a lot of the girl clothes anyway. :) Thank you!

  2. I think the loving part is the same and should be layered on as thickly as possible and at every opportunity!

  3. key lime pie - that would bring me back for a visit. Boys need that hugging love just like the girls.

    1. I do love key lime pie. Publix makes one that is so nearly perfect I don't have to make it myself. LOL That's what I thought about the baby boys. :)

  4. The boys are easier I think. They just seem to go with the flow pretty easy. The girls seem to be a bit different. The girls are really cuddly though. Its a toss up. I love having them both. I am glad you are going to have a boy grandson. How nice for you and cousins so close together. My cousin and I were that close when we were young and we are still best friends. That will be nice.

    1. I had a cousin only 6 months younger than me and we were really close until she told me the only reason I got to take a trip to Maryland with our grandmother was because my parents were getting a divorce. She said, otherwise I would never be able to go and further, I took her turn. We've not been close since then. And we were around 10, maybe? I remember the trip but it wasn't fun because of that. Anyway, I think these two will be close. My oldest and the cousin closest to her age (only 10 months apart) were and are very close. He's a boy and I have to wonder if that made a difference or if my cousin was just a poop head. LOL

    1. My 4 were pretty much all the same- no one was difficult. I think God knew I wouldn't be able to handle them any other way. LOL They were different in their likes and dislikes and interests, though. I love their differences.

  6. A grandson, how exciting!!! Glad that you cooked. Easter was different for us this year, we went out with Adam and Gabby, along with her family. It was very nice, I had a nice time but I really missed cooking our Easter dinner.

    1. I miss it when I don't do it but I wouldn't mind going out sometimes. I'm glad you enjoyed time with Adam, Gabby and her family! It's nice when the families like each other. :)

  7. I think you'll be fine if you just pile on the love no matter the gender. Also, I've been told to put him in those adorable soft blue smocked baby blue outfits as early as possible because that won't last : ) We can compare notes. I think I have my head around it now, but it definitely took a little thinking. Glad you had a happy Easter. Baby M favors your side of the family, yes?

    1. That's what we were thinking. It's just that girls are so familiar, you know? I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Yes! Let's do compare notes! Baby M does favor our side for the most part. There was a time she looked like her daddy when he was a baby but we told him we loved her anyway. LOL Good thing he's a good sport!
