Ducks vs Squirrels

I know at least some of y'all have seen this one:

My ducks moved out when the squirrels moved back in.

The first time I saw it I shouted, "THAT'S ME!" because it is. When my nest first emptied out I decided my immediate call to action was getting my ducks in a row. So I did. It was great! I was pretty good at getting my ducks in a row as the lovelies were growing up even though I had a scare before I learned to go-with-the-flow which is something you HAVE to learn if you're going to have children but with a new phase, that of the empty nest, I had to readjust those ducks. Everything was great until one of the lovelies moved back home. And then, another came home. That's when the ducks left and the squirrels moved in.

I blame social media.

I like to have nice things. NOT expensive things, but nice things. My definition of nice things includes things that make my house feel homey. Things that make me smile. Things that I simply enjoy looking at. Things that spark memories. Nothing needs to be expensive. I just like for everything to fit and be nice and tidy and clean. That's it. Wait, organized. I love organized. I adore going back to the same place time after time and finding my things right where I put them. Ok, now that's it.

The tidy people never move back home.

There are 6 of us in this family and we're split down the middle in the messy vs tidy way. Which is fine. No 2 people are the same. But 3 of us are similar in our clean tidiness and 3 of us are disgusting not bothered by a mess or dirt.

Two things:
  1. Every time someone moves back into my house it's one of the messy ones and the third one lives here already. That means I am the only one living here who prefers clean and tidy.
  2. Does no one on Pinterest live with messy people?
Pinterest pinners know nothing of full disclosure.

The answer to #2 is probably not. Some of the Pinterest posters probably take those lovely pictures speedy quick before their messy family members destroy whatever it is they've posted. What I'm looking for is the board entitled: How to get messy people out of your house. Or, How to make messy people not be messy. Or, Does anyone else in the world have to live with messy people. Or, How to handle messy roomies. Something, anything that tells me how to throw these people out of my house get these people to respect the fact that they are not the only ones living here.

Maybe my house just isn't social media worthy.

Or MAYBE my house just isn't social media worthy. And when I think of it like that, I'm ok with it. I'm not going to have one of THOSE houses even if everyone moves out and I get the house to myself. I don't have the money and, if I did, I can't see putting out THAT much for frivolous items. Also, I do not have the TOUCH. My mother has it. My aunt has it. My Nashville daughter has it. I do not. I am destined to be a social media worthy house wanna be.

Even my best efforts are thwarted.

Anyway, the reason I have squirrels instead of ducks is there is no need to tidy or clean or paint or anything until I know it will stay clean and tidy for longer than 24 hours. I've seen what these people can do to a house. Have y'all seen the ruins in Rome? Well, there you go. And then there's the fact that there will be TWO grandchildren in this house close to summer's end. Of course, grandchildren can do no wrong so...

Ok, let's hear it. How in the world do y'all keep your ducks in a row if you live with messy people? OR, are you the messy ones? 😲

  1. "social media worthy" - that is not worthy of thinking about. Ok, I do think blog worthy might be a thing.
I'm not a cleaner. This does cause problems with the cleaner in the house. I don't think I'm sloppy, messy, well not too much. I'm just not inspired to clean much but I do clean (mostly under threat). Overall my standard of acceptable clean is different than that held by my wife. As I write this I hear the vacuum running so maybe I should too.

    1. Ha! I am not crazy about it but I do like things clean and tidy. Especially with a little one crawling around. Clutter makes me nervous and dirty makes me furious. I just don't see the need to be dirty. The other two here can take way more than I can and when they hear the vacuum running, they'd better run. LOL

  2. Nothing I do or say is really social media worthy but do I let that bother me, nope.......

    1. Ha! Neither do I. Though I do love seeing some of the homes. There's one blogger friend who has my dream house though it would be way too big for me now. Plus, I wouldn't enjoy hanging out with the rich people so...LOL

  3. I feel your pain Pam. I do like things tidy and I lean toward a more minimalist preference in design, but my husband--he likes to save and display everything. Our refrigerator is covered in pictures, magnets, business cards, you name it, it's there. There is not a single empty space in our curio cabinet and no rhyme or reason to what is next to what. There is a distinct line on the top of our dresser where his half ends and mine begins. Some days it drives me crazy; others I'm able to shrug it off. I'm thinking I need a zen room that is mine alone. Hmmm...I may actually do that.

    1. A Zen room. What a lovely idea! If I ever get my boomerang kid out of here. :) It is so annoying. I've been emptying out cabinets and drawers now. Even when I get rid of all I can, their stuff is still everywhere.

  4. You make me laugh, sorry, you just have a humor about you and I love it!!! I know what you mean though. I tell you this, I used to say when my babies were young that my floors were clean enough to eat off of them...and I really felt they were nearly germ free. I tried so hard to keep a clean house for them to grow up in. I still like a clean house but with my health issues it isn't always as clean as I'd like it to be. Thank you Pam for linking up at the #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty. I shared this post.

    1. I'm so glad you get my sense of humor. It's lost on so many. Fibromyalgia makes keeping on top of house cleaning more difficult all the time but I try. You'd think they'd help knowing this but they don't. I try to keep things as germ free as possible with Baby M crawling around. Of course, she just started walking now! Thank you so much for reading, commenting, sharing, hosting! You do so much for us grandmas! :)

  7. Ha!!! Ha!!! I have three squirrels, I mean children. Ages 16, 9, and 5. (Like most 9 year olds, mine is into slime-which is a NIGHTMARE!!!!) There's no way my house could be on social media unless is was on a Pinterest Fail Post! And I embrace that!

    1. I wouldn't have even thought about it when my 4 girls were growing up. I never cared then and when company was coming, we threw stuff in the cabinets and closets. LOL You'd think things would be different now that they're all grown up but one lives here and then there's the husband so... :) Thanks for stopping by!

  8. My husband and I are both minimalists so that makes life easy. I'm not really worried if my house is social media worthy or not LOL:) Thanks for sharing your thoughts at #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty

    1. You are lucky! I don't worry about it either other than I wish it was neat and tidy. :) I'd be willing to live alone to get it, too. LOL

  9. You always make me laugh. When I was younger I thought a clean house was a necessity! Now I know it is important but not a necessity. Thanks for sharing at #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty.

  10. Haha, now that's funny! I have had kids move back in and I have a messy house. But, I've learned to shove the mess aside before I take pics for pinterest! 😉

  11. My empty nest generally stays somewhat tidy and clean. But, 3 adult kids and 3 grandkids are visiting this week. The house is a total wreck. But, I love it!! They live so far away that visits are infrequent. Now, if anybody tried to move back home, that would be a different story! Thank you for linking up at #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty. I’m sharing your link on social media.

    1. Mine did, too and then 2 moved back in and BAM! It was gone. If they just came to visit from time to time, that would be different. LOLThanks!

  12. I have been there and done that. I had my son and his wife living in our basement while saving for a house. Then my son, his wife and 4 grandchildren (but grandchildren can do no wrong!) stayed with us for 4 months after their house sold and they didn't yet have one to move in to. Our ducks were not in a row for the entire duration!
