G is for Girls

I wanted to have children from the time I was a little girl.  And I always wanted to have daughters- not once in all my wanting about children did I ever want a son.  Be careful what you wish for We ended up being blessed with 4 daughters and I can honestly say that nothing in my life has given me more joy than the 4 of them (and Hubs, of course---although he might be responsible for an occasional bout of angerannoyancegrief).  I never once wished we had had at least one boy. I never thought that I had missed out on anything either (and I still don’t).  And, while Hubs might have hoped that one of our blessings had been a son, he has never once voiced it and I know he would not change one single thing about our family (that part he has voiced).

Our girls’ birthdays are every 3 months of the year: January, April, July, and October so we have the four seasons covered.  All 4 are blonde the oldest being the lightest with the shades going darker with each one—the youngest being the darkest.  They are the same way in height—they have remained stair steps since they were little—5’10”, 5’8”, 5’7”, 5’5.  The four of them are very close to each other which gives Hubs and I a great deal of comfort.  We like knowing that the girls will be there for each other when the time comes that we are no longer available (my way of saying ‘passed on’).  Certainly there were times while they were growing up that I wasn’t sure they would ever be close.  But, thankfully, it was all just a part of growing up with sisters.  I didn’t know that because I grew up with 3 younger brothers and, while we fought from time to time, no disagreement lasted over five minutes and was usually resolved by one of us punching the other one.  No yelling and fussing and tattling.  Just a good punch and it was over (although, if truth be told, I might have been known to resort to a tattle or two if I thought one of them was going to get the better of me on the punches—hey, I’m not stupid ).

Our daughters have several traits in common with each other (although we tried never to compare them because, as my dad's mother used to tell me, "They are each individuals and should never be compared to one another but allowed to develop into their own self."): they are 4 for 4 on: getting a college education; being loyal to their friends and family; being strong, independent, and successful; being adventurous; being talented (although all four possess talents in different areas); loving to travel; loving music; developing their own opinions and standing firm on their own, individual beliefs; loving dogs…Hubs and I could not be prouder of the way our lovelies have grown up.

Each of the girls has her own individual traits as well and, as different as they are, it's interesting to me how their individuality compliments one another.

Breezy, besides being a talented cellist, writer, painter and flat out brilliant, has always provided our family with the best comic relief EVER!

She always delighted in the little things...and still is a lover of animals.

And she may have annoyed a sister or two along the way...

Deanie was our thumb sucker...
whose talents were focused on dance and voice...
and partying and shopping and talking and flirting...(did I mention that she was brilliant too?)
Birdie has many talents too!  Besides hanging upside down and being, you guessed it, brilliant,...
she wowed us on the soccer field (that's her coming up on the far right- she won the ball too!)
and on stage! (she's on the right).
And our DoodleBug, besides being cute and quite smart (ok brilliant) --
totally enjoyed softball and--
entertaining us with her humor and percussion abilities!
This is the 7th day of the A-Z Blog Challenge for the month of April.  I decided to try this challenge in the hopes of keeping some momentum going; getting my brain to stay warmed-up; and trytrytry to improve my writing--well, really, to find my voice.  Just click the badge on my sidebar to join in the challenge!

And now it's time for the Friday HOP over at Hilary's Feeling Beachie called Follow Friday Four Fill-In Fun!

This week’s statements:

1. My favorite kitchen secret is the way I prepare brown rice--saute chopped onions in olive oil; add the brown rice to the pan and stir to coat with the olive oil; mix a Knorr veggetable broth cube into the water; add the water to the rice, cover and cook.  OR put it in a baking dish and bake in the oven.  I love brown rice this way because it doesn't taste like oatmeal!

2. Any flavor is my favorite flavor of ice cream. As long as it is covered in toppings- hot fudge, pineapple, butterscotch, caramel....

3. My favorite pair of slippers finally wore out.  I loved my Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer slippers SO MUCH!  They were CUTE and COMFORTABLE and I wore them year round.  Alas, they are no more.  Tucker loved them too...

4. If I could just have one more go at life.  But only if I could have it knowing what I know now...but that would be cheating, wouldn't it?

  1. You have a lovely family. After I had my son I really wanted to have another boy. God blessed me with a daughter (I believe) in order to teach me a few things. I really wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm stealing your brown rice recipe!

  2. You have certainly been blessed with your 4 beautiful daughters! How lucky they are to have you for parents, too! Each one in the family complementing each other's strengths!!

My first priority when it came to a wishlist for babies was...healthy. Next, if I were to have a son, he had to come first, followed by a daughter...we, too, were blessed beyond belief and my wishes were answered exactly as they'd been ordered :)

  15. Awesome post!! Yours are getting better every day - mine are not :-D I'm hoping I'll at least get to M before I give up the ghost. Your tribute to your daughters was so touching. I'm sure your girls will treasure it long after "you're no longer available".

  16. Stephanie- Mostly in their dad's genes for talent, mine for smarts. LOL

Michele- It's really good! I used to not like brown rice because it reminded me of oatmeal and I don't care for oatmeal. But this way, it's good!

Julie- They are really great! But the time with them growing up was so short...and quick.

Bernie- Buy enough for two and I'll join you!

Nisey-It's really good that way! I'm heading over to your blog now!

Donna-Don't give up! Your posts are great! I really enjoy them and look forward to them every day!

  17. You were certainly blessed with your four beautiful daughters. What a wonderful family, and wonderful that they all get on together (it doesn't always work out like that). We had two daughters, then a granddaughter, who is now 13. Then all of a sudden we had a little grandson (by our other daughter) and I could just eat him! He is adorable. We've also been blessed by him having a little baby sister. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

  18. This- We hope to get some grands in here at some point! But no one is interested at the moment. So, we just continue to hope!

  19. I like what your Dad's mother said, it's a good philosophy. It's so tempting to compare, but who likes to be compared? Not me!
your 4 girls are wonderful, but then, that's what I'd expect, cos they have 2 wonderful parents who are so proud of them.

  20. Mimi- You are too sweet! Thank you! GrandMoore was the best! She had 5 kids and never, ever compared them to one another.

  21. Having two granddaughters after raising a boy was so much fun. There is a big difference in raising them. Glad I got to experience both and still see my grands grow. Good post!
