HUMP DAY HOPS!

It's time for my TWO favoritey fun HUMP DAY HOPS! If you're here for Wednesday Hodge Podge only, then scroll down.

The first is a new/revised meme from Patrice at Everyday Ruralty called Chats on the farmhouse porch!

Questions
  1. Have you ever colored your hair? If so, what colors have you tried?  Goodness yes! I am a natural brunette- light brown with a hint of auburn. However, red is my absolute favorite color for hair so I have gone red (well, auburn) before and I loved it! Now, I just go with a light brown called pecan and what I have left of any auburn still comes through (thankfully). The reason I color has changed though- I'm covering that gray. That hateful gray that just won't stop coming.
  2. What's your favorite kind of music? This always depends on my mood of the day but if I had to pick one I guess it would be rock. No country though. On any day. Ever.
  3. What are the last three movies you watched? Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil; Father of the Bride; The Resident. We got rid of our cable and have Netflix now. So I'm re-watching a lot of movies. There aren't that many available via Netflix that I'm really interested in. However, they do offer a few good Pilates videos and the documentary list is fairly decent. I've been watching the America: The Story of Us series- I think the History Channel made them--and they're not bad. Right now I'm watching a documentary on Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony this is pretty good.
  4. Do you remember your first pet? Yes. He was a black Dachshund named Duke. And I used to sit on the front porch and share my cookies with him- I'd take a bite and then he'd take a bite. He was a great dog!
  5. What was the best or most interesting "back to school" thing from your childhood?  The new dress! I loved shopping for that new first day of school dress and then putting it on for the first day back!

Now it's time for WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE from Joyce at From This Side of the Pond.  This meme is a great way to get to know some wonderful new bloggy friends and learn more about some old ones...not that I'm calling anyone OLD, mind you.

1. Using what's in your frig right now what sort of meal would you be able to make for guests who are knocking at the front door this very minute? It's lucky that I have a few things leftover from the baby shower this weekend! I could put together a veggie tray and fruit tray as well as some shrimp tarts and cheese and crackers for appetizers. Then, for lunch, I would serve some of that delicious Tomato Zucchini soup I made on Sunday! OR, if they prefer, I have all the makings for some She Crab soup! OR I could make crab dip--depends on what the visitors want!

2. What is something about yourself that you hope will change but that probably never will? How quickly rude people annoy me. I really should just let it go but I don't. I either very visibly shake my head or I will actually say something. I've got to stop this.

3. What's something about yourself that you hope will never change?  How passionate I am in the fight against things such as prejudice, injustice, intolerance, judgmental attitudes, narrow-minded blowhards, etc.

4. Do you usually send serious or funny greeting cards? Why? Almost always something funny. I like to lighten up dark situations and add to bright ones. There are some occasions when I won't send a funny card, like for sympathy, but I also keep it uplifting-- none of that depressing stuff.

5. Bird watching, shell gathering, or star gazing- your choice for whiling away the hours? Oh gosh! I love to do all those things! Sometimes I gather shells while I'm bird watching or star gazing! It's easy to take part in all three when the beach is only 5 minutes from the house!
6. Do you double or triple check things? If so, what? I double check. The oven, the lights, the doors, the washer and dryer, the fans---all things electric and all things that lock.

7. What's your favorite place for people watching? Downtown Charleston! There are all kinds of people down there all the time. The college is down there and tourists galore! I have taken some of the best and some of the funniest pictures of people down there! It's a blast!

8. Insert your own random thought here. Not much on my mind today. Just kind of hanging out waiting for autumn to get here. Oh, and the school kids might be selling wrapping paper soon so I can't wait for that to come around! It was much better when they sold Sally Foster (when the lovelies were in school) but I buy it anyway! I just can't resist!

  1. Loved your answers! I need to put downtown Charleston on my list of places to go people-watching!

  2. I can't believe so many schools have started already. This is move in week for many area colleges but public school classes don't begin until September.
Great answers. I may have to join in Hodge Podege as well. I left my Porch answers on her blog.
And today I am running out with a friend to go star gazing - in a planetarium. I have not done that in decades.

  3. Have I ever colored my hair??

You betcha. When my hair was much shorter and I wore glasses Doug said that if I let me hair go gray I'd look like Mama in Mama's Family. That was enough for me.

Right now my hair is only about 30% gray anyway. But it's still too much for me. When it goes totally gray I'm thinking of coloring it so it'll look like cotton candy. By that time who'd I be fooling anyway?

  4. Betty- Thank you! If you ever do come to town, call me! We'll people watch together!

dogsmom-I remember starting after Labor Day. Around here it has something to do with tourist season, or so I've heard. I haven't been to a Planetarium since the lovelies were little! I love going! Have a great time!

Michele- That's hilarious! Men always know just the right thing to say, don't they? LOL My grandmother colored her hair until the day she passed at age 90! I guess I'll be the same way! I love cotton candy!

  5. Only started coloring my hair in my 40s to hide the gray and keep it as close to my natural dark shade as possible. I could never be blonde, red or light brown. Wondering at what stage I'll permit the gray to stay. I think you are courageous to stand up to rudeness! I keep quiet, but I don't think that's the solution. Loved the fast meal you'd dish up for unexpected guests! I'd offer them tea or coffee and hope they leave soon after! I am not into spontaneous catering and being taken by surprise. Must be my English blood. We only do things by invitation :)

  7. I so wish I lived closer to the beach. It is my absolute favorite place to be. It seems to put everything in perspective for me - you know - how big could my problems be in comparison to the size of the ocean. In my little pea brain it equates to me relative to God - ain't nothing in my life that compares to His power.

  8. Hi!
I've never been to Charleston, sounds like a great place to visit. Have a great day!

  9. Desiree-I've been coloring mine for about 3 years now. I don't like the gray and I don't see me letting it stay- ever. I don't love being surprised by guests but I make do. Unless it's someone Hubs knows, generally they aren't allowed in the house.

Donna- It is so relaxing to go out there and just walk or sit. Tucker likes it too...there is one beach that you can let the dogs run free until 10 am!

Sherrie- You should check it out! We are inundated with tourists nearly year round so a lot of folks like it.

  10. I love your appetizers!
I have never heard of shrimp tarts.
    Sounds yummy.

I would enjoy living close to the beach.

I believe Autumn is on the way.
Our weather is actually a bit cooler this week.

  11. I always enjoy reading your answers. Isn't covering gray so hard. When I was at the beach and I saw ladies with all gray, I just don't know if I can do it.
I watch lots of Netflix too. I have got really spoiled to no commercials.

I hope it cools of some for you soon.

  12. You can really cook up a feast from left overs! That´s impressive.
No country music? Don´t you live in a county music area?? haha I love it.

  13. I'm with you on gray hair--I don't ever see myself "going gray", although I love my hubby's hair gray. Go figure!

I can see where Charleston would be a great place to people watch. I saw some interesting things on our trip to the historic part :) I took a few photos, too! I love your city.

In answer to your question, yes, I'll share more weddig photos along and along. I hope the photographer will release them soon.

I used to be like you--I disliked all country music. I had a change of mind in 94, and never went back to pop. LOL I'm just a good ole' country lovin' girl these days...

  14. Wish I lived close enough to come over for some She Crab soup!

  15. Our school sold Sally Foster back in the day. With 5 kids, I STILL have some in my supply, and my youngest is a sophomore in college!
Lucky you to be able to enjoy the beach. As for me, it's gray all the way!

  16. I've given up hoping that anything about me will change. Me and everyone else has just gotten used to me being me.
I'm comin' by for lunch - that tomato zucchini soup sounds delish! And anything you want to do with shrimp or crab is OK with me.

  17. More things we have in common. Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil is one of my favorites and I hate country music!! I knew I liked you! Hugs sweetie! I love getting to know you more.

  18. Michelle- I ran across the shrimp tarts a while back and everyone loved them. Now, they’re a regular at our gatherings! It really is nice living close to the beach. Except for the tourists. We are having upper 80s low 90s so it is cooler. Or, not as hot. LOL

FG- Thank you! It is hard to cover the gray. And, as soon as I do it, it’s right back the next day or so! Annoying! I can’t do all gray- but I love other people’s gray. Odd, I know.

Betty- Come on over and I’ll cook you up some vittles. LOL I think we’re more of an anything goes as far as music is concerned! You are too funny!

Kathy-I like the way Hugs’ gray looks too. But not mine. Luckily, it’s not all over my head. Yet. Let me know if you come back this way and we’ll get together! Can’t wait to see the rest of the wedding pix!

Joyce- Just let me know when you can come and I’ll make it for you! I would love that!

Susan- I just ran out of Sally Foster a few years ago. I’m not sure what they sell now but it doesn’t last near as long as SF did! I think gray looks fantastic on other people. I just don’t like it on me!

Stephanie-Everyone’s pretty much used to me being me too. But one of these days someone’s going to smack me if I don’t stop saying things. The soup is delish and I will make it for you whenever you can get here! AND I’ll also make you my bourbon shrimp and grits- to die for!

Barb- Yes! We must be sisters! You’ve got to get down here or I’ve got to get up your way! Soon as this heat goes far, far away! LOL

  19. Good answers. I have highlighted my hair for years. My brain is probably starting to turn to mush, no wonder I have a hard time spelling anymore!

  20. I hate that grey hair problem too. It seems to make the hair color last a shorter period of time too! I used to share cookies with my dog just like you did, but those cookies were Milkbones. I lived through it, but it's embarrassing when I stop to scratch behind my ears (with my back leg) and hold up traffic! lol:)lol:)

Thanks for joining in this week!

  21. What's Sally Foster?? And I'm totally with you on country music. We've got Netflix too and I'm switching to the 'instant play only' plan.

You liked that new school dress? I hated every dress I had to wear and thought it so unfair that boys got to wear jeans!

Did you like 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Susan- Thanks! I know what you mean. And it sounds better as an excuse than the age issue! LOL

Patrice- You are such a riot! LOL I always enjoy this meme! Thanks for hosting it!

Judy- It's a fundraiser company that offers awesome wrapping paper! We are just doing the instant play with Netflix. Oh, I didn't like having to wear dresses but, since I did, I always enjoy getting new ones! I did like the movie.

  23. One time in Charleston, we were talking about how neat it would be to go to college there! Charleston is one of our most favorite places!

  24. Your 5 minutes from the beach? How nice for you - and you have great left overs in your house!!

  25. Love sharing cookies with Duke!!! How sweet is that?!!! And I had a Doxie myself. A red one.

Oh and gray hair? I love it. I would never change mine from the gray I have now. In fact, I'd love to have the color of gray that Paula Deen has!!!!

  26. Red is my fav too- I had it an outrageous red a couple of years ago but it ran out and ended up sort of orange!
Our schools don't go back until Sept 8th - I wish they would go back now...I can't get my shopping done for falling over loads of schoolchildren in the shopping centre milling about bored ...oh well!
Love your responses - as always

  27. Mary- Our two youngest went and loved it. Well, actually, the youngest is a junior so she's still loving it. LOL

LynnMarie- Yes we do. It's a great location! But it does get touristy around here in the summer.

Anni-My brother still gets Dachshunds. The one he has now is Miss Polly. I just dislike gray on myself. On other folks it looks great!

Carol- How goes the book PR? How excited are you at this point? I'm excited for you!

  28. I love your answer to #3, I feel passionate about those things too. I double check lists but not things around the house. I can't believe it's Sunday and I'm just getting over here. I am still trying to get caught up from vacation and it's going really slow!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It makes me feel connected to everyone even though we may live far apart! Have a wonderful day!
