HUMP DAY HOPS!

HUMP day is here which means it is FINALLY time for my THREE favoritey fun HUMP DAY HOPS!

If you're here for Chats on the Farmhouse Porch or Get Wired Wednesday only, then scroll down.

First up this week is WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE from Joyce at From This Side of the Pond.  This meme is fun and sometimes even poses a challenge (read: she makes us use our noggins!).

1. How do you typically react in a sudden, extreme, pressure-filled crisis? Would we want you nearby in an emergency?  I hold together well in these situations. Or, at least I have thus far. Whenever the lovelies got hurt I always kept it together until way later. But, once they were in bed, I would lose it. Luckily, Hubs was always there to pick up the pieces. The biggest thing that I've experienced outside of the family was at school when I was working as an interventionist. We had lock-down drills every month or so. But, on this particular day, the code word was used so we knew this was NOT a drill. We had a group in our room and noticed that some first graders had just returned to school from a field trip and were playing on the back playground. Without giving it a moment's thought, we rushed out there and brought them into our room--which was one of the freaking trailers in the back of the school. We had the kids sitting in position and we sat there for TWO HOURS while trying to reassure everyone and keep them quiet and entertained. All was fine- a man tried to shoot his father across the street and had run onto school grounds and into the woods BEHIND THE PLAYGROUND! It was scary because we had no idea what was going on. We just knew that it was NOT a drill. But I totally held it together. It's amazing what you can do when the safety of children is threatened!

2. Caramel apple-caramel sundae-caramel corn-caramel macchiato...of the four, which caramel treat would you choose? None of the above. When I was eating sugar I LOVED Kraft Caramels. But that's it.

3. Is there such a thing as destiny? Explain. I don't know. Sometimes I think people use a belief in destiny to justify inappropriate behavior. For example, I know someone who reconnected with an old boyfriend and had an affair with him. She justified it by saying it was their destiny to reconnect and unite. Right. Whatev. I certainly don't like the thought that someone was destined to be murdered or raped or molested. I think I am more of a believer of random events and outcomes.

4. What's your favorite piece of furniture? I'm referring to something currently in your possession as opposed to something on your wish list. It's a toss up between my Grandmother's cedar chest and my Great Grandmother's side board. I love them both so much!

5. Wednesday night marks the start of the 2011 Baseball World Series. Did you know? Do you care? Will you be watching? Ever been to a professional baseball game? If you're not an American do you find the title 'World Series' annoying or amusing? BASEBALL? Ewww...give me FOOTBALL or BASKETBALL or SOCCER. But BASEBALL? B.O.R.I.N.G.  However, my brother, Hubs and DoodleBug LOVE baseball!

6. A sound that takes me back to my childhood is the fan. I had a window fan in my bedroom (no AC back then) and it would lull me to sleep. We have a fan in our bedroom that I turn on every night and it lulls me to sleep.

7. On average, once you've linked your hodgepodge post to mine how many other participant blogs do you visit? Do you ever come back to the Hodgepodge later in the day or even the day after to read posts? I do come back and read as late as the day after. I've made new friends from the Hodgepodge! I usually visit all the bloggers I already know and try to visit at least five that I do not know.

8. Insert your own random thought here. I LOVE picking up visiting lovelies from the airport. I TOTALLY HATE dropping them back off at the airport. Good-byes suck.

Next up is a HUMP DAY HOP from Patrice at Everyday Ruralty called Chats on the farmhouse porch!

Questions

  1. What kind of camera do you use? I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS digital SLR. And I am in love with it! And grateful to Hubs who bought it for me a few years ago.
  2. What will you have for Thanksgiving dinner? If not in the US, tell us about a special meal, please. I will be preparing a completely organic, gluten and sugar free meal this year. I'm still working on the recipes. And we will have a turkey because, really, what's Thanksgiving without a turkey for goodness sakes!
  3. What's the biggest vehicle you've driven? Hubs used to have a big blue truck (a 3/4 ton Chevy) and I loved driving that thing! People had to get out of my way or get run over! It was AWESOME!
  4. Have you ever been on a train? This can be a commuter train or the chugga-chugga-choo-choo kind.:)  Ok, my very first train experience (which you can read about right here) was so traumatizing that I have NEVER gotten on another one. EVER. And I never will.
  5. What question would you like to ask the people visiting on my porch next week? When do you begin decorating for Christmas? OR Do you prefer to decorate for Christmas by yourself or do you like for everyone to join in? OR Do you decorate your house for Halloween, Thanksgiving AND Christmas or just one or two? That was a terrible way to phrase that one, wasn't it?

Last but NOT LEAS:
I'm wired are you?

  3. I always wanted a cedar chest and have even contemplated having one made so I could pass it on to my kids. I still think I´ll have that made....one day. You should post about your chest.

I wish I could come to your Thanksgiving dinner. Sounds like I´d be able to eat everything on the menu!! Love it!

  6. Too bad about the sugar part of caramel...it really is a homey, comforting taste. I don't miss it enough to go get some, though.

  7. Whoo, your experience with the lock down does sound scary. Thankfully it ended on a good note.

Now to answer your question from Patrice's farmhouse porch...
I like decorating for Christmas about mid November. It helps to make the transition easier from Thanksgiving to the craziness of the Christmas season. At this point, though, I only have the tree and lights up. I feel more relax when I do this. Then the first weekend in December, we usually put on the ornaments. Yeah, it's a bit crazy sounding, but it works for us. =D I don't do much decorating for Halloween/Thanksgiving. I put out a few general fall themed items like pumpkins, mums, and scented candles. That's about it!

  8. My grandmother gave me a cedar chest for my 16th birthday and it's definitely my favorite piece of furniture!

  9. Even if I'm working on not eating sweets I will have a carmel apple when we go to the orchards! Sounds like you have two lovely pieces of furniture. Baseball is my least favorite sport.

  10. I wasn't sure if my comment went through so I checked- it is somewhere out in cyberspace. Oh, well!I like the questions you suggested in #5. You may see some of them again. Have a good week! I'll send that recipe soon.

  11. I hold it together pretty well ~ if I do say so myself ~ I can give direction and give direction and stay on top of it ~ just until everything is resolved. Then I become a quivering crazy mess. And let me just add the caveat that I've never had to deal with the thought of someone holding a gun. All bets are off on that one.

Speaking of trains ~ sometime I'll have to tell you about my little run in with the window in my grandmother's house after watching an episode of Twilight Zone. Why did people back then not even think of the trauma they were inflecting on our poor little psyches!

  12. Michele- Where the heck have you been?! I'm heading over to your blog to find out!

Barb- I can hardly wait! Just let me know!

Stephanie- I don't either. But the candy corn sure has been trying my patience. LOL

Cathy- It was so scary! I was quite glad when it was over! I'm going to have to decorate in stages this year since Birdie is in Texas until the 18th. She usually helps me with all the decorating!

Megan- I love mine too! It's just so special since it was hers. And the side board belonged to her mother.

Debby- I would love to partake of a caramel apple but they have sugar in them and they make me feel like they're pulling my fillings out! LOL

Patrice- I've been having issues with commenting as well. Thanks! I'll be looking for the recipe!

Donna- That's me! Hold it together until after it's over and then I'm a wreck! You would step up to the plate just fine if the safety of children was involved! Ohhh, I can't wait to hear the story!

  13. I agree that too many use "destiny" to justify inappropriate behaviors.

I seem to be the only one, so far, who is a big baseball/World Series fan. That's ok, I'm big enough of a fan to make up for everyone else! ha!

  14. Kathy- I used to enjoy baseball when I was growing up because my granddaddy used to take me to the Braves games. He adored baseball and I adored him. But I never enjoyed baseball on tv and what I mostly enjoyed at the actual games were the hotdogs. LOL My love of football and basketball comes from my dad and soccer from Birdie who played for 8 years. Enjoy the World Series!

  15. 100% I hate goodbyes and love hellos! I love your hops but I get lost in all the link this to that so I just read yours!
Hugs and you are doing so fantastic on your challenges and do you ever post how many total lbs you've dropped thus far?
    Hugs~

  17. Sush- Thank you so much! So far, I think I'm at 58 lbs since June. I'm looking forward to the holidays just so I can do the hellos again!

Biz- I like them too! She is quite something on and off the field! Thanks!

  18. I finally got by I am so glad. Yesterday was beyond crazy. You have lost 58 pounds since June? That is amazing. Awesome. I am thinking of asking for a new camera for Christmas so it is nice to see what you all have.
I started a book my a lady named Anne River Siddons and it is called
Islands, the whole time I am reading it I am thinking of you. Have you ever read it or heard of her?
Well I can't wait to see what recipes you come up with. I am pretty excited. My family doesn't seem to notice now the gluten free things I fix which is nice and they even like salads for dinner.
Who knew, Have a nice weekend Pam.

  19. How special to have furniture that was your grandmother's.

Uh, yeah-that facebook thing is not what I'd call destiny : )

  20. FG- I think my mother reads her books---and I think one or two were set in the lowcountry of SC. Though I could be mistaken. Hubs and DoodleBug are enjoying everything so far. Hope your weekend is fantastic!

Joyce- I love having the pieces for that very reason! Isn't it amazing how people justify their actions? Have a great weekend!
