Hump Day HOPS

The heat may be OPPRESSIVE but it can't keep us from the Hodge Podge or from Chattin' it up on the porch!

1. How often do you check the weather? How do you check the weather? Not very often. It's summer in the low-country which means it's HOT. Every single day. Without a break. Not just HOT either- the heat is OPPRESSIVE. And I'm not kidding.

2. Since this is volume 84 of the Wednesday Hodgepodge, and since I got married in 1984, and since I'm attending a wedding this weekend it only seems right to post something related here.

"Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other or ever so similar beforehand, it does not advance their felicity in the least. They always continue to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their share of vexation; and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life."

Agree or Disagree. Why? I don't know. I mostly feel that happiness is a choice rather than a matter of chance. Then again, there are those people in our lives who stand in the way of our happiness or at least try to. Some who even make us unhappy. I suppose foreknowledge of a person would send you into the marriage with your eyes open and then, as time went on, you would either still be fine with his/her 'defects' or not so there would be a chance that you would or would not be happy. Then again, I guess being lucky enough to find your true love, your soul mate, would tend to make their 'defects' not near as noticeable---like a defense mechanism--to protect yourself from not being happy with them. I think the only way we can know as little as possible about their defects is by turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the other person and, in all honesty, who wants to live like that? Of course, to be fair you have to take into consideration the time period about which Austen was writing and the character who said it...sorry---this response is confusing and too long.

3. Do you like to dance? Have you ever taken dance lessons?I took ballet and tap and jazz when I was a kid and teenager. And I do love to dance- but mainly just around the house by myself. Breezy, Deanie and I used to shag (that's a dance y'all) when they were growing up and we still will do it given a wedding or something. But I never dance with the husband. He's not a dancer and I don't like dancing with him.

4. Fresh from the oven peach pie or home made peach ice cream? Pick one. I'll take the ice cream. We don't do peach pie around here. It's peach cobbler!

5. Should people accept unfairness and learn to make the best of it? How will injustices be corrected if we just sit around and accept that things are not fair? When something is unfair, we have to speak out and take action and get it changed. I could write an entire dissertation on this topic but I'll spare everyone--since I didn't spare y'all on the Jane Austen question.

6. The top five all time summer movie blockbusters (released between May and August and grossing at least 100 million dollars) are-Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars (the original), Ghostbusters, and ET. Which one's your favorite? Even though I really enjoyed all of those, I'm going with Star Wars!

7. If given the chance, would you like to visit the moon?If they can just beam me up there, Scotty. But not if I have to take a spaceship. I'm just too chicken for that.

8. Insert your own random thought here. The OPPRESSIVE heat has fried my brain. I have no thoughts. Just see my response to question number 2. It got pretty random. And muddled. And may just be proof positive that the heat has, indeed, fried my brain.

Questions

  1. Do you exercise? Goodness yes! Every single day, rain or shine, motivated or not!
  2. What's your favorite type of party or get together? I LOVE our oyster roasts! But, regardless of the occasion, I only enjoy very casual gatherings. I am not fancy and I do not like to get dressed up.
  3. What's your favorite kind of melon? Watermelon!!!
  4. Do you ever go to a farmers' market? YES! The best one around here is every Saturday downtown Charleston! It's fabulous!
  5. Would you prefer a series of day trips, or a week's vacation? Neither. I'll just stay home thank you. But, if I must choose one- I'll take a series of day trips. I really like my bed.

  2. It took me forever to come up with a concise, understandable answer to #2.

I prefer peach cobbler to peach pie ... I love pies, but peaches somehow need to be baked as cobblers not pies. ;-)

  3. Betty- I know, right? I think one thing and then I think another and then another...it nearly drove me mad. Not a far drive...LOL

Kathy- Definitely cobbler when it comes to peaches! With a bit of vanilla ice cream...that probably goes without saying, eh? LOL I can't wait to read your number 2--mine is so muddled.

  5. I'm just about like you brain fried! It's been really hot here, too. Thankfully, today is rainy and the temperature is hoovering at 69. I'm really ready for fall to get here.

I like the idea of vacations and I certainly won't turn one down, but I'm like you I prefer my bed over hotel accommodations any day!

  6. This heat has been oppressive, hasn't it? I hate to even stick my head outside!

We're fans of peach cobbler around here, too. Yum!

I saw on the post below this one, where you'd successfully put up some spaghetti sauce! Yay for you! The first time was scary for us, too, but now it's just routine.

  7. Oh, I love your answer to #5...'cause I adore my bed, too. I don't sleep well in any other bed...I'm getting too old!! I envy you living in Charleston...one of my very favorite places to visit. I would dearly love to live in Mount Pleasant!!!

  8. Should I worry because I found your Jane Austin answer totally right on and understood everything about it (or almost)? Let me get this straight, on the Hodgepodge first you answer the questions then you make up more questions?
Long live Peach cobbler, and I don't dance with the husband either. :)

  9. Betty- The right kind AND the right person to travel with. The husband is NOT fun to go anywhere with.

Cathy-Please send some of that wet, cool weather down here! I'm really ready for fall too!

Kathy- I hate sticking my head out the door too---especially since I still have NO AC in the car! I am so excited about the spaghetti sauce! I can't wait for more tomatoes to ripen!

Debbie- I so love living in Mount Pleasant! It's just about perfect. I can't sleep anywhere else comfortably either- maybe if I could take my bed with me. LOL

Alessandra- No, don't worry. Let's just consider ourselves in good company and leave it at that. LOL You answer the questions and then you just get all random. Which is not hard for me to do. :)

  10. Peach cobbler is definitely my favorite. And I might be more inclined to visit the moon if they could beam me up. I'd just be afraid that somehow they wouldn't be able to beam me back down again! : )

  11. I think the simple answer for the quote from Pride and Prejudice is simply that it no longer applies to reality in this day and age. Women don’t *have* to be married or have a man in their life at all. We don’t have to accept the “flaws” of an essential stranger. There was a time omen had to accept a physically abusive man; better than no man at ll. We call women who accept that “in need of help” now a psychological illness. We now have what would have been a luxury then; we can be in love with the man we marry and settle for nothing less.

I do peach crisp with fresh peaches to go with my peach ice cream!

I love farmers markets! I go with my Dad or my big brother in Michigan,

  13. J haven't been to an oyster roast in years, but I used to really enjoy them. Yay, watermelon! I bet the Charleston Market is super. My good friend says everything about that town is. I'm with you about being comfy in my own bed. Day trips fit the budget better anyway.

  15. My husband doesn't dance either. I do hope to dance with him at an upcoming family wedding. I enjoyed each of those movies too and they were all differnt in their own ways.

  16. Oh I am so envious about the heat where you are. It's winter here and I'm sick of it. Plus it never gets really hot here which is a bit of a bummer.

  17. Hey there, I had to come and read your question 2 that is a really great question and really makes you sit and think. I liked how you answered it. Even living so close to the beach, you have oppressive heat? Do you know they call my Town Bako for short?
I liked your chat questions too, I sure wish I lived closer, I bet we would have fun. My balance ball is huge too, I am short so I fall off lots. :) It makes me laugh and the dog gives kisses so it ends up being fun.
    Have a great Thursday Pam.

  18. Yeah. The bed thing is a big barrier to enjoying travel. I'm really waiting for the 'beam-me-up-Scotty- type of travel. In the meantime, I suffer but I go.

Can I have some peach cobbler? It sounds better than both of the other offers.
