Well, Isn't That Sweet?

I started a 21 Day Sugar Detox on November 3rd because Birdie (lovely 3 and mommy to Baby M) loves to challenge her mother. Ha! Actually, we were talking and I knew I needed to back off the sugar so I ate the remaining Halloween candy that night and began on the 3rd. And what timing! I mean, right here at the holiday season?! Perfect (feel free to insert a snarky derision of sarcasm.)

It wasn't as difficult this time as it has been in the past and I'm pretty sure that was because I made my mind up to do it. Sugar is not good for anyone whether it's refined white or raw organic or even made by bees. It's just not good for us. It's also a huge reason for my girth and my aches and my lackadaisical attitude.

I am now researching recipes using dates instead of sugar (and NO sugar substitutes) for baking sweets and WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR INPUT ON THIS! I've found a couple of recipes that think I want to home make honey chocolate chips. I do not. I'm all about baking from scratch but I have my limitations. Sheesh.

There is a pretty good article on One Green Planet that was helpful on what to use but I didn't see the recipes. I did find a few recipes at babble that I might like to try but some of them use honey and syrup which is not that much better than sugar. Especially if sugar is an addiction like it is to me. The Organic Authority lists a few fruits AND the amount you need per amount of sugar called for in a recipe! They also link to an interesting article in the New York Times Magazine that is long but worth a read.

That's as far as I've gotten in my research. I'll continue to look and read and ask and I shall share it as I get it. :)

Ok, y'all can read the diary if you wish by clicking THIS LINK or just click on the page tab above this post titled, Sugar Detox Diary.

  1. Good for you Pam! Sugar makes me feel so bad anymore that I do try to stay away from it. I do use a tiny bit honey, hubby is gluten intolerant now so that makes it easier. I just quit baking. ;( I don't know any easy way to do anything except cold turkey. I had to do something about my migraines and sugar and chocolate are the trigger foods. It took me awhile to realize it wasn't worth the pain and suffering. I am a slow learner. I think that is so great you shared this today.

    1. Cold turkey is the way for me as well. Doing it bit by bit means I'll keep increasing instead of decreasing. I'm a slow learner too. And I love sugary goodness. :) Thank you, Kim!

  2. I've not tried it, but I have done the low/no carb thing which has to be very similar. Not an easy thing to do, so you have my applause! Keep us posted!
