The Wednesday HOPS!

If you're stopping by for the weight loss portion of today's post, just scroll down.  If you're here for Wednesday Hodge Podge, it's the first HOP today.  If you're here for BOTH, just start reading and keep on to the end!

FIRST is WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE from Joyce at From This Side of the Pond.  This one is a great way to get to know some wonderful new bloggy friends and learn more about some old ones...not that I'm calling anyone OLD, mind you.

This week's questions:

1. Summer's here-whoohoo! What's your favorite sight, sound, AND smell associated with summer?  I love to see my garden from the window near the air conditioning vent; I love to hear the air conditioner running; and I love to smell rain in the air- not that we're getting any.

2. Fireflies or lightning bugs...what are they called in your neck of the woods?  We always called them lightning bugs and would spend HOURS running around the yard chasing and catching them.  We would put them inside jars with holes cut in the lids and then let them go.  There was a Great Dane in the neighborhood, Hannibal, who loved to chase lightning bugs with us!  The lovelies enjoyed chasing and catching them too--I recall them calling them fireflies based on the book SAM AND THE FIREFLY.

3. What is something from the past week that reminded you of your childhood?  I'm tutoring the most precious little rising third grader you've ever seen this summer and it has reminded me of summer days when I used to sit in our Magnolia tree and readreadreadread.

4. Define 'the good life'.  I don't know...being surrounded by good friends, a loving family, being productive, knowing how to laugh, having a sweet little puppy around all the time...

5. Tell us what we'd see if you took a snapshot of your desk/work space?  A complete and total MESS!

6. Peaches or watermelon...yes, you have to choose.  Watermelon.  I love peaches but, given a choice, I'll take the watermelon.  UNLESS the peaches are inside a cobbler.....

7. Ever been skinny dippin'? Is that too much for the Wednesday Hodgepodge? Rest assured we won't need details...unless of course you feel you must but remember, this is a family friendly blog so keep it G rated. Yes.  And that IS all you're going to get.

8. Insert your own random thought here. Sad day.  Birdie works as a trainer for soccer camps in the summer and she was working one at Wofford this week.  They needed a female trainer at the camp at the University of West GA and she had to go---which means she stays there for two weeks.  Why does this make for a sad day?  Because this weekend EVERYONE is coming home to celebrate Birdie's acceptance into the grad program in Texas and now she won't be able to be here.  WTH?!  I guess this is one of those "best laid plans" deals.

The SECOND HOP is from Patrice, at Everyday Ruralty, who hosts Wednesday Words of Weight Loss every Wednesday!  It's a fun HOP that offers encouragement and company on the issue of weight.  It's never too late to join!  Come on, this is your week to join in the FUN!

QUESTIONS

1. I've heard it said that there are two body types when weight is gained? Some are like an apple with a big gain in the middle and others are like a pear with a larger lower region. What kind of fruit are you? :)  I think that I may be the most unfortunate type---a combo!  I am both an apple and a pear- YIKES!

2. Have you ever joined an exercise studio or gym?  Not fully.  I've tried trial memberships twice- the first one I really liked because it was just women and the location was perfect BUT, they didn't survive.  The second one is in a crappy location and is co-ed-- I will say that it was quite nice when some of those 30 years old boys came in to lift--talk about hot?  LOL  But I much prefer, for now, burning calories on my own.

3. What was your favorite vacation ever?  Our vacays were basically boring...or cliche.  A week at the beach every summer and weekends camping in the mountains year 'round.  I've never really had vacays since I've been married (27 years).  SO, I guess I don't have one.  That sounds so sad, doesn't it?  LOL

4. Is there a famous person you'd like to be like?  I wouldn't mind being a combination of Abigail Adams and Eleanor Roosevelt.  Progressive, strong, enlightened, courageous, intelligent to the point of genius, defender of women's rights...who wouldn't want to be like them?

5. What's your favorite way to have coffee? If you don't drink coffee, then tell me about another beverage you like.  On the rare occasion that I do drink coffee, I like a little bit with my flavored creamer and sugar.  In the winter I really enjoy hot chocolate with about a million tiny marshmallows or marshmallow cream!  Yummy- lish!!!  Summer is for water and iced green tea with Splenda and lemonade (this is half 'n half-- half tea/half lemonade)!

  3. Amy- They are good like that, aren't they?! Now that the strawberries are going away, it's time for watermelon---hope to find a sweet one! Thanks so much!

  4. Joyce-Thanks, it's just not the same but what are we supposed to do? It just sucks. Oooh! Anything Paula Deen is wonderful! It's all that BUTTAH! LOL

  8. Always good reading your responses...found your first very amusing...that AC is clearly your best buddy through the hot, humid, summer months :)

I, too, am so sad your Birdie won't be able to make it to her own celebration party...that really does 'suck' :( I know how disappointed this makes you feel!

You're so nicely symmetrical being both an apple and a pear...just one or the other tends to make us look so disproportionate ;) I know! I'm an apple!

I loved your answers for what makes for a good life...I don't think you can get it much better than that! As far as vacations are concerned, there's no shame in not having gone to different/exotic locations. I think most of us aren't able to do that during our childrearing years...all of the resources go towards raising and rearing the children...and, of necessity, doing without for ourselves in order to give our children the best start in life! Also, those frequent weekends you spent up in the mountains will probably live in your daughter's memories forever as being some of their happiest, most carefree times. With children, as you know, it's not about the extravagance of a holiday...it's all about quality! Perhaps you and your hubby will be able to plan a nice little romantic getaway for your 30th Wedding Anniversary, even if Tucker has to go along with you :)

  9. That really stinks that she won't be there for her own party.

  10. Watermelon...yes! Peaches are good but there's just something about the cool freshness of watermelon.

Have fun with the tutoring. Helping kids discover what we love ourselves is the best experience, isn't it? And if it brings back a happy memory - even better.

  11. Sorry Birdie won´t be there this weekend. That sucks. But I´m sure you´ll spoil her afterward.
I love watermelon too, but Peach cobbler would be better. :)

  12. Oh no, what a bummer that Birdie can't make it to the festivities. Are you going ahead with them anyway? Fun post by the way ;-)

  13. Desiree- You're right about the air conditioning! I would be in a bad way without it for sure! Birdie is sad that she won't be here too but she is happy about all the money she's making! She got a huge bump up in pay since she's now a board certified, degree carrying athletic trainer. LOL Yeah, I'm not much on vacations anyway- it seems like way more work than just staying home plus Hubs has way different ideas about vacationing than I do.

Mary-It really does but she is glad about all the money she's making!

Stephanie- I agree! I've got to get one this weekend! I so enjoy my tutoring! Especially when the student 'gets it' and their face lights up so bright!

Betty- I know. But she's thrilled with her pay increase this summer! Now I want watermelon AND peach cobbler...LOL

Annie-The other lovelies are coming home anyway because they arranged to and have the time off. So we'll have a good time even though she's not here. Then she and I will travel to visit everyone before she has to work the local soccer camps. Thanks!

  14. I like your answer to question 4. I obviously had a bit of a problem coming up with something. It wasn't worth holding the post while I searched for some brain cells!I love hot chocolate and know that it gets lonely, so I cover it with marshmallows!-not in this heat though

  15. Maybe you can all skype Birdie on Sunday. I am sure she has a laptop with her, our kids have every tech gadget they make. I know, it's not the same she will not be there with you all.

I def think you and hubby need to take a little time for yourselves now that the ladies are gone, even if it is just for the weekend.

  16. Patrice-Thanks! I love those ladies! You're so right about hot chocolate- it does get lonely AND not in this heat! Did Wendell get his ac yet?

Susan-She may very well have her laptop with her...Thanks! I didn't think of that! Hubs is not that much fun when we go somewhere. It's best if I go and tell him about it later. LOL

  17. I used to love lightning bugs when I was young. Sadly I haven't seen any since then. Are they really still around?

  18. Okay I thought I was a follower but now for sure I am. I really enjoyed your answers this week too.

  19. Michele-I really haven't seen them down here in years. The lovelies chased them when we visiting relatives in NC and the upstate of SC...it's too freaking hot and humid for them down here.

Farm Girl-Thanks! I know the feeling...that's happened to me more times than I care to admit to! LOL

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It makes me feel connected to everyone even though we may live far apart! Have a wonderful day!
