It Takes Big Balls To Do That

Most of y'all are familiar with how brilliant some of my ideas are. I've had another. Two, in fact. And they turned out to be just as brilliant as my past brain storms.

The exercise ball already in my possession seemed perfect for my first particular plan. 'Seemed' being the key word there. The lovelies had all been sitting on it without any trouble so, why shouldn't I be able to? Because I'm taller and much heavier than the lovelies, that's why. So when I sat on the ball, my knees came to my ears. This is NOT a comfortable position. Though it did get a rousing roar of laughter from said lovelies.

Armed with determination and my debit card, I headed out for Wal-Mart. Surely they made exercise balls for tall people. They do.

I could hardly wait to get home and pump that thing up so I could start engaging my core immediately. I pumped (and pumped and pumped and pumped) until the ball was just the right size and took into the study where I threw the desk chair to the side and carefully placed my new seat in its spot.

As soon as I sat down I could feel my core engaging! "I must have music," I thought to myself. So I plugged in my iPod whereupon I began ball grooving to the music. For a couple of hours. Those hours went by so fast what with the music and all--seriously, it's way big fun to move around on that ball to the beat of the music. But I needed to get up and move about and do something other than work intensively on the computer (i.e. read blogs).

Lesson number 1 when using an exercise ball as a chair: it's not just your core that engages. Apparently your entire body engages---a fact that does not become apparent until one tries to stand up from said exercise ball. Thus, my legs were wobbly and my back was so sore I could hardly move. Or sit. Or lie down.

OUCH!

No worries...once I got my legs back, I sat on the desk chair and decided that, when I was sitting on the desk chair instead of the exercise ball (which I stayed off of for two days) I would use my 8 lb hand weights and lift while reading blogs doing important work on the internet.

The only problem was that my arms were so sore from all the lifting of the hand weights that I could hardly type. So, if you're have not been getting comments from me, it's not because I wasn't reading. It was due to the fact that I couldn't really move my arms which meant that my fingers couldn't get to the keyboard.

Did I stop using the exercise ball and hand weights? Nope. I did take a break---I had to, I couldn't move. But I'm back. And it's better.

And there's nothing quite as fun as ball grooving to your iPod!

  1. That does sound fun! I have an exercise ball lurking up in my attic somewhere. I should dig it out.
    Oh - and I am glad to hear I am not the only one out there that can be seriously debilitated by the use of hand weights! LOL

  3. You know what, that sounds awesome. I don't have to pump mine up by hand, I have an air hose in the house hooked up to the huge garage air compressor. Which really is a good idea since my ball has been used tons in the past and now leaks but only enough I have to fill it every couple of days. I also have hand weights and was thinking I'd start using them in the evening if I'm watching tv during the commercials.

  4. Well....dang, I must check into this...I love balls. And I love groovin' to music. I should try it. And, off to Wallie's mart I go. But, where do I look for them>>sports department or where the computers are?

    Seriously, I must check into it. Good thing my lovelies have left the nest long ago...I am sure they'd laugh themselves silly.

  5. OK...I'm not laughing. No, really. I'm not. Well not at you, anyway. I'm remembering the one time I tried sitting on a 'desk ball'. I fell off.
    I'm impressed that you could actually stay on board for two hours! Hats off to you for another day of discovery!

  8. Gosh, I feel so bad for you. How big is that ball? I have used one for years as a chair for my computer. I never even got sore. I fall off lots and hit the floor a lot,( I am not graceful at all.)
    I feel so bad. I guess it is like me swimming, I thought I was going to drown when I tried to swim my first lap.
    I can see how your arms would be sore from the weights.
    I am going to have to put on some music and bounce as I read blogs. Maybe I just sit there like a toad. :)
    I hope you feel back to normal soon. Maybe it was the running?

    Judy- DO IT! It's fun! Well, it's fun AFTER the initial pain. LOL

    Julie- Do it! I hope all this effort pays off- because the grooving is fun but the pain isn't. LOL

    Betty- Yep, everyone seems to have gotten a kick out of that except me. LOL Thanks!

    Kim- Well, if you do fall off, you don't have far to go since the ball is close to the floor. LOL

    Anni- In the sports section! Where all the exercise equipment is. Make sure you read on the box about heights first. LOL

    Stephanie-Yes you are. I hear you all the way down here. LOL I haven't fallen off YET. There's still time though. :)

    Kim- It's only 80" around. You should start groovin' to some tunes while you're on it-you'll feel it then! Swimming is killer! Wish I had a pool!

  13. This post is just too funny, I can just imagine you, sitting on the ball at your desk, doing very important work on the computer. That's the same kind of work I've been doing. There's quite nothing as painful as a sore core, to the exception of sore arms and legs. Keep it at and you'll be one firm lady.

    P.s. I have a dog named Easy and ever since you wrote "easy peasy lemon squeeze' on one of your posts, I've been calling my dog that.....every single day....every single time I see her...She's beginning to growl at me...lol :)

  21. I am totally going to track down my ball! Come to think of it, I am going to also use my weights while reading blogs... I mean doing important computer work. It will make me feel way more productive I think. :)

  22. I totally want one of these. I sometimes have foster kids though and I would have to hide it when they come over-I can see them hurling it at something/someone in the middle of a bad moment.

    But there's no excuse not to use one otherwise!!!
