Schooling and the Hodgepodge

Three day weekends are FABULOUS! Until you have to go back to school on a Tuesday and everything is off kilter and students are still sleepy because their parents kept them out until after 9:00 on a school night and the teachers are wondering WTH happened to those three days.

Good thing we have the Hodgepodge to keep us from pulling our hair out!

1.  What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to actually doing? Relaxing and enjoying my time away from school. I had no down time with ToxicMan home all summer nursing his injuries. It was awful.

2. Share a favorite memory of your own back -to-school days as a child. I loved getting my new school clothes every year and I loved that we didn't start back until AFTER Labor Day and the weather was already beginning to get a bit cooler.

3.  What's one chore or daily task you prefer doing 'old-school' ? What chore is there that isn't performed 'old-school'? I hand wash dishes, use a vacuum, get on my hands and knees to really clean the floors, I move the furniture to clean behind and under it, I use a damp cloth on the ceiling fans...am I totally missing something?

4.  Share something you've learned in life through the 'school of hard knocks'. Don't settle.

5.  As a child, did you mostly bring or buy your lunch for school? What was your favorite thing to find in your lunchbox? I think I remember eating school lunch most of the time. What I really remember is having to sit across from a student who always brought her lunch but she always had a green glob of snot in her nose and it was so gross I wasn't able to eat anything. Which is why I don't remember whether it was brought or bought. But I do remember that green glob. UGH! In high school I spent my lunch money on cigarettes and hung out in the smoking area during lunch. Yeah, I know. It was the 70s, what can I say? I only did it for a few years and quit. And, I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. Is that what they call irony? I don't know, that word confused the crap out of me.

6. Football season is upon us which has me wondering... how big of a sports fan are you (not just football) ? On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being 'I scream at the players through my television screen' and 1 being 'is knitting a sport?' where do you fall in fandom? I'm a big 'ol 10!

7. Share a favorite quote you think might inspire students of all ages at the start of a new school year. Sit down and be quiet? LOL I'm kidding. If you type in the right password, it will work? Ha! I am not your mother, you do it yourself? Right... I may look calm but, in my head, I've slapped you silly 3 times? No...hang on, I'll get this... "Think. It's not illegal. Yet." Ok, ok.  No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.

8. Random thought. Were we supposed to do this one today? My random thought is I have no idea what my random thought is. Hmmmm..after all the trouble I went through trying to contact Google about my blogger domain for Empty Nest (unsuccessfully) someone called me last night to help me fix the problem. Really? Last night. AFTER I've gone through the trouble of my domain? Now I'm supposed to call GoDaddy and have them do a URL redirect back to the original URL. Are you KIDDING me? So now I'm paying for two domains but only using one? Good grief.

Have a great rest of the week, y'all!

  1. I'm glad you pointed out the Random Thought mistake. I wondered why the first few HP posts I read today didn't have one. Its a whirlwind here and I'm congratulating myself for even getting the HP up : )

As far as chores, I don't know that most people clean like a couple of generations back. Throw a disc in the toilet, swiffer the floor, dishwashers, etc. Some things just need elbow grease!

Kids went back to school here yesterday. So sensible. As Labor Day weekend came to a close I thought , 'Now it feels like the end of summer'. Not in mid-August!!

  3. I get on my hands and knees to clean my floors, too. My, what a difference it makes!

  4. We had a kid in high school whose teeth were green. It was unappetizing as well.

  5. Oh, my! That green glob of snot really left an impression! Ugh. There's always at least one child with a snotty nose...

I laughed at your opening paragraph. That pretty much sums up the day after a three-day weekend, doesn't it?!

Just reading about your domain issues drives me crazy, too! After all this time? Really???

  6. After Labor Day was always the end of summer, I loved that too! I was thinking like you, I think most of the things I do are old school. Joyce's answer was about hand written notes which I also still do. I didn't do a random today which was perfect because I didn't have one.

  7. I wish I could still get down on my knees to really scrub the floors. I used to do it that way. Now I can't even kneel in church. It hurts too much. Blasted knees.

    Loved your Hodgepodge!!

  8. Your answers were definitely different!!! And fun-ny!! I wish I had the energy to get down on my hands and knees to do the floors. But my heart just isn't in it anymore.
We had a green glob guy all through elementary school. Upon entering a new junior high, discovered a girl with Cheetos fingers. Always!! Blech!!
We didn't start school until after Labor Day either. And no AC! Hot.

  9. Joyce- I wasn't sure, but I thought maybe your focus was elsewhere...like on a certain wedding. :) I wish it felt like something other than summer down here. We're still in the 90s and I don't know how much more I can take. Sheesh.

Joyful- It truly was. Just disgusting.

April- It just doesn't seem clean otherwise, does it? :)

retired- Yup. Green teeth, green nose...either way, it's disgusting. :)

Kathy- I still remember it like it was yesterday. And that's still the first thing I think about when someone brings up school lunch. UGH. Yeah, the Google thing is a bunch of crap. Dummies.

Debby- I just rambled for my random thought. That's all I do these days. I'm too tired for much else. :)

Terri- My knees are giving me fits right now. Not sure why. Regardless, it's still getting more and more difficult to get down there and clean those floors. I do have a steamer that I use every so often but they just seem cleaner when I do it on my knees. Thanks!

Nonnie- Thank you! I was going for funny. :) My heart isn't in quite a few things anymore. Cheetos fingers! LOL Too funny.

  10. HaHa. The quotes kill me. lol And I'm so glad you shared that lovely mental image of the girl across from you in the lunch room. Ranks right up there with the kid who ate lunch and threw it up on his plate - sitting right across from me. It's what I remember most about that kid. Today he's a really nice man, etc. etc., but still in my mind he's the kid who threw up his lunch.

  11. P.S. I didn't do a Random today because I thought Joyce was trying to see if we were rigid and inflexible and I was going to try to fool her into thinking I was not. LOL

  12. Judy- I'm not sure which one is worse! UGH. Gross! Hahahaha! You're so funny!
